Hi guys. Can anybody give me an idea of where to find a MAF for my '96 S500? MB part number 000 0940148. MB don't do them anymore and Bosch UK can do me one but only as a one-off and with a 12 week waiting time. Euro car parts and all the usual suspects don't have one. I've called dozens of MB specialists and have come up empty handed so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Steve.

It's a long shot but give Dronsfields a call. If no luck there then try one of the many on-line breaker services the ones that text your mobile. I have had some success for my 124 using these. Or, try One of the reman companies like BBA in Rochester. They may well be able to re-furbish your existing MAF.

I've tried so many scrap yards and breakers. Ive just spoken to Carl at W140.com and he thinks he might be able to get one. There was a bloke down south who said he'd be able to lend me one to see if it was the MAF that was causing the whole of the issue but I can't get hold of him now unfortunately. The chap on the parts desk at one particular MB specialists told me I'd be better off scrapping the car! It will be for sale soon though I think as I don't have the time to do this again. The stress....

When you disconnect the MAF, the engine should attempt to use a default map. My understanding is that this map is to compensate for the lack of MAF and WILL cause a change in the engines idle behaviour.

So, if when you disconnect the MAF you see no change, that suggests that the MAF is dead and the engine is running the default map. If you do see a change? That suggests that the MAF is healthy. That is the theory (worked on my C55).

I have mentioned this to the garage where the car is but he is confident that after a couple of hours diagnosing and the symptoms the car has that it is the MAF meter. Thanks for the heads up though.

MB dont do them anymore?!? - really?

Might be worth calling another dealership, that sounds highly unlikely for there once flagship model (bar the S600) that isnt that old...

(not doubting you, im doubting your dealership).

Yeah I've spoken to at least 20 specialists over the past couple of days and they all confirm that MB no longer do the part. it'd be a lot easier if they did!

NLA on MB's own Classic Parts search, sadly.

However, on a 1996 car I'd expect Motronic, not LH-Jetro. That has a different P/N for the MAF (940748), and that is still available. Does your car have distributors?

Classics Centre Irvine WILL get you one, but probably Bosh not Genuine, however MB themselves have been selling non star Bosh ones for some time, I think there is a gentlemen's agreement between the two companies in regards to these MAFs....? Try Hanson or if he has retired one of his contemporaries at Irvine.

Failing that PCS, Olly has a magic hat - sometimes it works like you would not believe! :):)

Here's a comparison between new and old MAFS on a W140 V8 using jetronic LH1 . Don't know how reliable a set up it is ??? but gives an idea of the type of voltage readouts you get on Star.

Well I tried MB, PCS, mercedes classic, and many more from various searches on this forum and every single one said they couldn't get hold of one. Then the chap at W140.com (I think it's Carl) came up trumps. It should be with the garage tomorrow. I was even told to scrap the car a couple of times by people I was speaking to! Also turns out I should have looked at my log book because I remembered my car being an N plate 96 but it's a 95 which means the MAF is a different design. Bit of a Frank Spencer moment me thinks.

Edit: it's a lucky second hand find from W140 apparently. I think everyone I spoke to was a bit shocked that MB no longer had these in the shelf, so to speak.

It has distributors. I'm basically a fart and mis-remembered the year of my motor.

I'd like to thank everyone for their input and if anyone reads this who I spoke with regarding the part it was nice to chat and thanks for your time.

I would keep your old one and do a post mortem on it? Its probably the platinum? filament that has gone on it but it would be interesting to see if that was the problem.
ps Sorry to be the bearings of bad tidings but are you sure its the MAF itself- have you checked that filament visually- this car does come from the era when engine wiring loom insulation goes bad which might explain the problem- just be very careful when handling the MAF wiring when fittting the new one.
