I had a similar problem and the car went back to Mercedes time after time and I put bits of foam and bluetack everywhere and slowly drove myself mad. To their creditiIt was finally diagnosed as faulty shocks which they replaced under warranty and instantly cured.

Alloy wheels can be chromed. Chrome plated alloys are an option on Chrysler PT Cruisers so they must have some ability to withstand the UK climate and road salting, etc. I imagine that kerbing would be bad news by damaging the chrome plate and allowing corrosive elements to get underneath...

I've done some searching on these boards (unfortunately you can't search on "ABS" because it's too short, so I worked through some combinations of words with ABS), anyway, it seems that the most likely cause of the problem is the ABS wheel sensors.

I should also point out that it only really happens at very low speeds - like at walking pace or during parking and just as the car's being brought to a complete stop.
