I had a similar noise, not on tickover, only in drive but unlike yours under slight load. I have a W211. Wayne Gates of Harrow replaced mine and noise much improved. As I said my symptoms were slightly different ie happened in gear but under load.

Following a suggestion from a couple of the guys from this forum I took my E500 to Wayne Gates of Harrow. Terry looked after my car and diagnosed a suspension problem as well as giving the car a major service. Nice to have knowledgable specialists like Wayne Gates around.

Thanks Pop and Horatio. I was thinking along the same lines and I agree a local repair with Hammerite or POR15 is not a bodge. If it works why not. I could have a bodyshop do a professional repair, painting into the next panel and it won't be any more rust proofed. I do need to have on wing done...
