Lewyboy is right - the wires rub as you open and close the boot. When they wear through you get the symptoms you describe - easy and cheap repair though. Only issue with mine was that it went at the beginning of a holiday - pain in the ar*#!!

Lol!! I had my W211 for 3 years and always thought it was odd that the glove box opened like that (and cracked into the wife's knees!) - never thought it was broken as it was like it when I bought it as a an "Approved Used" used car from a Mercedes Dealer!!
