I had a similar problem to this when I had my wheel bearing done,I was looking to replace the abs sensor, unit the bullet and took it to Merc dealer, they worked out that the other garage had put either the magnet on backwards or the sensor the wrong way round, once swapped around it worked...

Sorry for the above, big fingers. I changed all the seat coverings, on my W211, from MBtex to leather, it is a job that can be done in your garage but the covers are a bit of a quest to remove with all the clips holding them on take their toll on your fingers, make sure you have plenty of time...
