If anyone's interested I have found the fault with the above. Broken wiring loom that goes from the tailgate into the roof.

Changed the side gas struts still the same. Looks like I may have to replace the motor in the roof lining

I have this exact issue with my w213 e class, if it is the gas struts, which ones, as there are 3, from memory. 2 either side and one that goes into the roof lining

I have an estate w213 and the button on the remote and inside the drivers pocket only throw the latch, however the boot lid does not lift. When I use the manual opening latch next to the reverse camera the boot opens as it should, automatically. I've searched so many posts on this but no-one can...
