2007 CL63 Loss of coolant - potential Headbolt failure, advice needed

Hi guys just back to give an update on this thread and some info that others in a similar situation may find useful. The good news is the car does not have a Headbolt or head gasket issue, the coolant was leaking from the plastic nipple on the thermostat housing. Definitely see that as a win as...

2007 CL63 Loss of coolant - potential Headbolt failure, advice needed

Just to add I looked under the car and there are currently no visible oil leaks at present. Will check back tomorrow after the car has sat overnight to see if there are any.

2007 CL63 Loss of coolant - potential Headbolt failure, advice needed

Hi guys so the plot thickens, I couldn't resist the temptation to take the car for a 10 mile test drive. The car drove fine until 9 miles when an error message popped up on the dash saying 'check engine oil level when next refuelling'. I was only 1 mile from home so I drove home and parked up...

2007 CL63 Loss of coolant - potential Headbolt failure, advice needed

Hi the low coolant message came up as soon as I started the car after it had been parked overnight. The day before it was fine with no messages. I'm sure the coolant level sensor is working correctly because the coolant expansion tank was empty. As soon as I topped the coolant up in the...

Haha that's just it, this punk is feeling lucky. I'll sleep on it tho!

I've added a photo of the stain, I put a tennis ball next to the patch for scale. We have had some pretty heavy thunderstorms over the last few weeks and the car isn't parked on the drive at the moment so some will have been washed away. I'm in 2 minds now whether to risk doing a short test...

2007 CL63 Loss of coolant - potential Headbolt failure, advice needed

Hi some interesting observations regarding the oil I extracted last night. After removing 1200ml I took 60ml of it and added approx 20ml of coolant. At the time the coolant mixed in and apart from looking a bit thinner it looked the same as the original extracted oil. I came back to the oil...

Hi thanks for your detailed reply, if a bolt has failed and released tension in one point on the head gasket would you expect that to be picked up on a head gasket test where gases are checked in the coolant expansion tank? My car passed the head gasket test? I will be sending the oil off for...

2007 CL63 Loss of coolant - potential Headbolt failure, advice needed

I'm just very surprised at the oil that I pulled out through the dipstick, it looks completely normal. As others have mentioned in this thread oil and water don't mix so I don't understand how it's possible. I will take some photos of the oil I pulled tomorrow and mixed with coolant to show you...

Yes that makes sense, I think the best thing to do right now is send the oil I've pulled off for this bronze analysis. That will give us a pretty conclusive answer on if there is coolant in the oil or not.

Ok thanks for that explanation, so am I right in thinking that if the coolant is leaking into the oil sump and the engine is running as normal without misfire or white smoke that the chance of hydro locking is low? Does anyone know of anyone with a m156 engine that was hydro locked after head...

2007 CL63 Loss of coolant - potential Headbolt failure, advice needed

Hi yes either way this has definitely been caught early which is one plus at least. having owned this car for a few years I was fully aware of the risks of low coolant messages - it's approx 1 litre of coolant lost and 90 miles with it mixed in the oil

2007 CL63 Loss of coolant - potential Headbolt failure, advice needed

Hi tha thanks for the link. I'm thinking to save time and get the same result I might drive the car for 10-20 miles and see if my oil level goes up again and my coolant level drops down again. I've sucked enough out so it's half way on the dipstick so that would be a faster way of finding out...

Hi thanks for your reply, I did a quick eBay search for glycol testers and it's coming up with the kit where you suck coolant into the tube and wait to see how many of the coloured disks rise up - is that what you're saying I need to test to oil with? I have one of those in my garage so if it's...

2007 CL63 Loss of coolant - potential Headbolt failure, advice needed

Hi thanks for your message, I mixed the coolant and oil and have left them in the container overnight in the garage. I will check tomorrow to see if they have separated but they had mixed in completely within a few stirs of the screwdriver. what's a glycol test, I've got the oil that I pulled...
