They are. Petrol vs. diesel and saloon vs. estate all have different final drive ratios. So putting a diesel saloon engine into a petrol estate body will also need a new diff to make it "right".

The relay shouldn't buzz. (That's bad.) The pump should run for a few seconds each time you turn the ignition on. It is. the M103s have a standalone fuel pump relay ("KPR"), but on the M104s the fuel pump control is part of the engine subassembly control ("MAS") unit.
