I got an AA report with the car when I bought it and the front tyres go from 2 to 4mm tread left accross each tyre (inside edge to offside) which would suggest they are poorly aligned I guess.

Thanks for the replies, I am thinking of Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres which have a 67 dB rating The noise doesn't vary when turning and only really gets louder as it naturally would with speed I did read having a 4 wheel alignment may help?
