Yes they can do, and the symptoms can be wide and varied. They often don't offer up a fault code or engine light either. As suggested, unplugging it can show it's at fault but obviously not easy if it's an intermittent fault

From memory i think there is 2 identical idler pulleys on the timing case on these engines so it might be worth checking the other one too. As said by your partsman, they're common for failure

There was definitely a recall for one of the high pressure ABC pipes on the W220/W215 in this country but i can't remember if it was all engines or just some. Also, are you sure it's your high pressure pipe they are quoting to replace? There is quite a lot of pipework for the ABC systems on...
