I use a signal booster to great effect. We have a combination of old ariels and large trees which means we get very poor reception. Without a booster I don't get any channels (analogue or digital) - with a booster I normally get about half the digital signals and a decent analogue reception...

I have been known to do the same - the boot wont even stay shut, let alone lock - I cringed about the expense at first too (not that we think the worst about our cars)
