Ok, for those needing help in future this is not too hard to do. You need to go in 'from the top' to get at the mounting screws. Remove the headunit (various videos online for this) and then unclip the leatherette trim below the stereo, which exposes the screws. Easy job after that.

I need to replace my CLS's climate control panel. I have a new (secondhand) part and need to fit it. How do I remove the centre console trim to get at it? I have seen videos showing how to access/remove the headunit, but nothing lower down. Does the thin leather section below the heated seats...

Looks like an expensive part from MB. I think I may go for a secondhand part in this case. I'm guessing it is located in the blower unit under the glovebox somewhere, I will have a rummage once the weather improves a little.

Update: I bought the DVD update for 2015/2016 from Mercedes Leicester for £100 inclusive (so check before buying from a non-Mercedes seller IMO). On my 2011 CLS this installs with no codes or PINs or external connections required. Just put DISC 1 in and wait. Total update time around 4 hours.
