I don't keep my cars long enough to justify winter tyres, and the weather is only bad for a couple of weeks a year.
OK when the road is covered in snow. If the road is clear then you have to remove them, as they can damage the road surface. That is the problem...
I'd bought a set of Chains for my car, big ones for the large rear tyres I have. But the snow in my area is not quite bad enough to use them atm....
Mine doesn't drop out but repeats itself briefly as it changes signal area. Annoying so I use FM mostly.

Yes pre-wire is an option, if you have it there will be a cradle holder in the glove box.

Lesley is right the earlier models do not fully function without a MB cradle or Viseo unit, which is cheaper. I had Viseo on my CLS for that...
The main benefit would be that it will charge the phone, and the aerial signal would be a lot better, assuming the car is pre-wired?
Have you driven through any floods recently, as this was what happened to my flooded car. Hopefully it is a dirty or loose connection as above.
The most unusual bird I have had in my garden is a Great Spotted Woodpecker. He came as a Juvenile first then as an Adult.
