OK when the road is covered in snow. If the road is clear then you have to remove them, as they can damage the road surface. That is the problem atm as the main roads around here are clear, it's only the side roads which are slippy/dangerous.

Lesley is right the earlier models do not fully function without a MB cradle or Viseo unit, which is cheaper. I had Viseo on my CLS for that reason.
On later models we have bluetooth fully functional from Comand with the steering wheel controls working too.
The main benefit would be that it will charge the phone, and the aerial signal would be a lot better, assuming the car is pre-wired?
I have pre-wire and an old phone fitted in a cradle, which I use as back-up, but my iPhone I just use on bluetooth
