w124 estate e320 1994 knocking from rear/ replacing rear sub frame advise sought

Yes, the 'why do you keep that old car going' is a common conversation. Only until they ride in it tho! I could have scrapped it so many times but I just decided to replace the part or get it welded and it just keeps on going. I recently bought a tiny and beaten up Citroen C1 for my kids to...

w124 estate e320 1994 knocking from rear/ replacing rear sub frame advise sought

Yes, those parts for the subframe mounts are still (or were) made by MB. They were very expensive though back on 2017 when I bought them. Too expensive and I did haggle them down a bit but they are solid and just do the job. There are separate parts for the actual triangular mount and the lug...

w124 estate e320 1994 knocking from rear/ replacing rear sub frame advise sought

I did this job on my 96 e280 estate 3 or 4 years ago. I bought an old subframe and old hubs and restored them separate from the car. Then after getting the subframe mounts welded with replacements from MB, had the whole lot fitted where the old one was. Only difference was that the subframe...

    W124 electric window

Hi All Help needed... 96 w124 estate rear passenger side window regulator stopped working. Was intermittent but finally stopped in the down position. I checked the switch on the centre console is working by swapping it for another and switch is good. I disconnected glass and chocked it up...

    W124 starting issues...

Thanks Graeme! That is a great document on the 722 gearbox. The fluid looks ok - it was changed 3 years ago. Yes, I wonder if a full overhaul of the gearbox is necessary. But it is finding someone who knows about these particular subtleties. The auto gearbox centre said their 722 expert had...

    W124 starting issues...

Thanks for all the replies and advice. There is a specialised automatic gearbox centre just around the corner from me. Maybe I'll have a word with them though was hoping it was one of those jobs I could do myself! But Optimusprime's words "the part is very hard to remove room is restricted"...

    W124 starting issues...

Thanks Natacha. I suspect you're right. If you get the chance, could you ask the guys who replaced the switch what the part is? Any further info greatly appreciated. Would like to get to the bottom of this... Tom

    W124 starting issues...

Hi all w124 estate 2.8, 5 speed, 252000 miles. It has a new starter motor and alternator and the battery is good. Twice recently the car would not start. All dash lights lit but no cranking whatsoever. On both occasions I shifted the gearlever to and fro and then back into park and it...

    W124 estate tailgate locking mechanism

Graeme Great pdf on the mechanism. Thank you. Good news on the lock. After thorough cleaning and lubricating of the switches and all moving parts I tested it by plugging it in to the connector and testing the latch with the shaft of a screwdriver and the motor started up as it should. Very...

    W124 estate tailgate locking mechanism

So, have been looking at the thing and have found the switches under the white plastic cover that pops off. See other pics attached. The first is a close up of the switch and the contact plate that rises to activate the switch when the hatch is closed. The second shows both switches and the...

    W124 estate tailgate locking mechanism

Hi All Someone slammed rear door and the closer stopped working. Door opens and closes fine but the motor has stopped its gripping action so rear hatch rattles over bumps. I have taken it out and have the horrible thing sitting on my table. I am looking to see switches to clean and other...

    w124 brake light switch question.

Thanks Graeme Nice diagram. Even tells you where the parts are located! The diagram seems to show the brake pedal switch having 3 connections which is confusing. All makes sense though. I will get around to re-connecting that wire and see what happens. Happy Christmas Tom

    w124 brake light switch question.

Hi All 1996 M104 E280 estate. I just fitted a new indicator stalk to replace the increasingly flaccid original and while reinstalling all the trim above the foot pedals I noticed a broken wire. It has become detached from one of the two connectors that attach to the brake light switch. The...

Pressing in W124 estate rear bearings & hubs

I need advice with installing bearings into 124 estate rear hubs. All parts ready on the bench. Do I press in the bearings into the hub carrier then the hub into the installed bearing? This seems the logical way to do it but just wanted to check before I started... The hub carrier is...

Need to borrow W124 hub bush install tool.

solved Hi All Managed it with a number of threaded bars, sockets and assorted rings. Tricky job and the bushing is not very sturdy so care needs to be taken. Ended up using the outer tube from the original bushing to use as a press for the last few millimetres. Not easy. The bushings...

Need to borrow W124 hub bush install tool.

Hi all Anyone got the tool that presses in the bush in the rear knuckle to which the lower control arm attaches? I need to borrow one quick! I have been pressing in and out lots of bushes recently with mixed results but these look like they are beyond my basic technique and huge old press...

    W124 estate rear hubs

Thanks Grober. Very informative video! Yes that all looks pretty straightforward except the pressing of the hub back into the bearing - that looks like something an amateur could really mess up. I guess I'll just go slow. Have bought new (old) hubs, knuckles and splash shields from ebay that...

    W124 estate rear hubs

Thanks all. I have seen SFK and FAG on sale. Is a good bearing £100 a side?! And is the pressing in process critical? The knuckle will be separate so can go on the press easily. I will source a stout bar of the same diameter as the bearing and use it to slowly and carefully press it down...
