If you're car doesn't have airmatic, I would suggest getting in contact with some of the mercedes garages on ebay as they aren't that pricey and they will tell you which ones you need with the springs.
You may be able to pry them out with a small flat prying tool, however depending on the angle/ pressure applied I feel you may snap the clips. Like anything, to do the job properly you will be safer to take the door card off. This will also negate the possibility of damage to the other door...
It sounds like more sensors have gone, do you still have the old sensors? I would be inclined to test all sensors, by the process of elimination? I would check all connections too, for any moisture ingress. As long as you mechanic has a plan, see if he can get it going - although we will all try...
The part number is A001 542 74 18 and this has been superseded by A 004 542 87 18.

You can obtain genuine sensors or good aftermarket unpainted ones from eBay for about £10-£30 each.
