    They know!

Following the curtailed trip to Yorkshire,to view another Mercedes, the car's plumbing was fixed and I ordered about £800 worth of bits for a makeover. Refurbed wheels, new tyres,a new wing, headlight and the Elegance carpentry. Due to get tyres fitted tomorrow and new wheels on but the car had...

aircon on and off or off and on!

Car: S203 facelift. Converted it to elegance trim and used the heater panel PCB that came with the wooden trim because it worked all the vents like the old 'un didn't. Driving back today, I thought the aircon wasn't doing much conditioning but once I pushed the off button, it came back to its...

    203 makeover.

I just didn't like the tatty aluminium trim and the armrest which just kept disintegrating so I bought a centre console from a breakers online, only to find that it had been physically torn from the donor car and largely trashed. Bilston car breakers are clearly well named. I salvaged the box...

    Coolant loss

En route to look at a Mercedes to buy but the 220CDI doesn't like the competition and wants to keep my wallet to itself. I got to Southampton and the low coolant warning came up. I checked. No lie, it is damn near empty and it wasn't last Monday when checked. Gentle run home and fill it up. No...

    Irritated.

Am I the only one to find the C class advertisement on radio and TV the most pretentious, up its own a-se twaddle I have heard in years? It certainly puts me off wanting one. Has it appeared in pseuds' corner yet?

S203 facelift. A fix for the dim display.

DSC_0286.JPG Take the instrument cluster out and unclip the seven clips on the back which will reveal the circuit board. Take a single strand of very thin wire three inches long and, having scraped clean the area around the two vias in the board (the tiny holes,) solder the wire in using a fine...

    A bit dim.

The LCD in the instrument panel (Facelift dash) is just that. Is it fitted with a backlight which can be upgraded or is there something dirty within that is causing this.? The contrast seems good and it is fine at night.

What to do with an old Comand...

My NTG2 is working just fine but it has a v2.2 disk in it from 2005! I would like to update it but I have heard that it is not just a matter of buying the latest map disk. I have found an MB download that creates a firmware update from December 2008. I expect this will prepare the system for...

    W203 heater flap motor accessibility.

The footwell motor doesn't seem to be moving much but left and right sides have different outputs so the lower dash will need to come out. The defroster flap isn't doing anything at all as far as I can tell. Can I get to the motor by removing the glove box? (Car is RHD.)

    Mobile cover

My 2004 car has been serviced all its life by main dealers and the mobilo assistance is still in force. The next service is a B which will be expensive. Is Mobilo worth it or should I service the old thing myself as I prefer?

    Front springs.

My S203 220CDi has new springs on the back and the front end feels as though it would steer a lot better for a little more height so I want to fit new springs. Would 320 springs be slightly stiffer or give a higher ride height?

Bluetooth HFP puck auto turn off?

Fitted it and it connected immediately with my phone. As soon as the code went in, it absorbed my phone directory into its Comand NTG2 and worked from the off. Delighted. I'd like to leave it plugged in. It looks as though it should be. Returning to the car after a while with the bluetooth long...

    W203 646 thermostat.

My replacement one has got a big hole in the bottom. Needless to say, the one on the car doesn't have. Can I bung it up or is there a mod that will make the cooling system better that requires it (and probably £500 worth of bits, four days work, severed digits and low chances of success?)

    W203 drains again

The swimming pool under the brake booster is a nuisance. The front Sam did not like it up it. The cover over the fuse box (rhd, driver's side ) is intact and drains towards the middle of the car. Where should the water go? Not the scuttle drain. Somewhere near the strut tower? I am baffled.

    Anticipated costs.

Jonsco referred to the anticipated cost of an aircon service when buying an old Mercedes. I thought about this because I, too buy old ones. A set of discs and pads. The exhaust system and an aircon service are usually a given. Front dampers more often than not and in all probability a new...

    The MEG

In case you are not familiar with the acronym, My car is fitted with one. It arrived with a starting problem, which, once cleared moved to the EGR system and, once that had been bashed went to play in the rear SAM, evaporating the HRW fuse. Coming home, the SRS lamp came on and, following a...

    The Ipod interface.B6 782 42 52.

I have acquired one to fit my 2004 C class facelift. The car is fitted with Comand NTG2. I have a plug on one end with a three wire stump of cable that looks like the audio. I expect that will go into AUX so that is easy. There is a bit of red thick wire and a brown one, too. Live and earth I...

    Chilly morning.

And only one side demisted. Worse, the rear window would not demist. Tron goes into diagnostic mode at teabreak. Flap motor reset. Some do, some don't. If that is the floor duct problem and it is stuck open, then it is likely to be the reason for reduced flow to the screen. Ordered the levers...

    Tearing out my hair.

Where do I find the W203 wiring diagrams. They must be available somewhere and with an old car, they are essential to have in my view. Will they be found in WIS, for example and, if so, is there a copy that runs on Windows 7 without virtual machinery and heaven knows what else?

    S203 mods.

I have found a Bluetooth adaptor at a decent price and that makes the difference between keeping the Comand in my wagon and putting in something else. I have also managed to find an official Ipod adaptor which was very cheap but does not have the loom to the Comand. I am guessing that my...
