Who to manage and run a house renovation? Builder or Architect?

Hello all. It's been a while :) 49 posts and no discussion of the design benefits of architects ;) Some interesting views on costs and fees though. Plenty of good advice above and I certainly agree on using an experienced builder who can show you round previous projects, preferably with a...

    Kitchen/diner lighting conundrum

Colour change LEDs ok in a kebab shop or a nightclub - in a kitchen  Have you looked at LED tape, can be dimmed, is warm white and makes great pelmet/skirting light.. Don't get it from the link, you won't like the price but bear in mind not all LEDs are equal. These are bright...

    Party Wall costs

Hi Charles Going rate in London appears to be between £750 to £1750 plus VAT per Award depending on the scope of services required. I guess if the neighbour dissents, then you are looking at the same again. In theory, all costs have to be reasonable. The process can be quite protracted, over 8...

    Anyone here canoe?

Update: We've been out twice on the Medway, once at Tonbridge and once at Yalding. I'm hooked, back again for an overnight camp this weekend with Junior B who shares my enthusiasm. Phone snap from Tonbridge: Have joined the BCU which gives us access to most navigable inland...

    Summer is over.

Been an excellent year for sun in Crystal Palace. I've been working in shorts and t-shirt most days - have flip flop tan lines on my feet from pacing about on the phone outside :D Garden has needed watering a lot (until recently) due to lack of rain. It really is grim up north ;)

For caravanners' eyes only - we're getting a new one!!

We watched a couple of gliders taking off, circling and landing one afternoon - very tempted to have a go at some point. We were here - if a glider came down near there it must have been pretty hairy as its a tight valley. Nice site, the only change I can see in 30 years is the addition of...

For caravanners' eyes only - we're getting a new one!!

Almost embarrassed to say, my folks bought an Abbey Cabaret a few weeks back and we got a demountable towbar fitted and I lugged it from South Cheshire to Little Stretton for a few days.. Caravans have moved on a bit since I last slept in one in about 1985... central heating  :D Junior...

    Anyone here canoe?

My friend has two, one like this and a single seat version of the same. He'd just been for a week of guided wild camping and canoeing around Loch Shiel with his family - the pics looked amazing.. Junior B loved it and spent a couple of hours sat up front paddling around Low Wray on Windermere...

    Anyone here canoe?

Hello All Not been around much of late and back from hols. Have just bought an inflatable kayak for mucking about with Junior B when ever possible. Hopefully heading out this weekend for first test following paddling about Windermere on a friend's kayak last week. Anyone into this have any...

    Serpentine Pavilion

Dodgy two tone would be more appropriate - every Maybach I've seen, usually within a 3 street radius of Edgeware Road/Park Lane usually looks something like this: As I'm sure you are aware, black is the new dark grey amongst Pritzker Prize winning Swiss Architects. :D I was just surprised...

    Serpentine Pavilion

Went to see this yesterday - surprisingly good, especially when it rained - full of lots of people chatting :) Was surprised to see who was the main sponsor, (at the foot of linked site) - the architect is Swiss..

New Mercland Website Again - Coming Soon

Looks great, as mentioned a couple of typos but easy to navigate etc. The only bit I'm not sure about are the colours for the apply for finance boxes etc. They need to be clear, but are perhaps a bit too 'acid' compared with the rest of the site. Don't know if you've seen this but it...
