    1994 W124 - Electrical??

Hi I've not been here for a while but..................... I have left the 1994 300d (W124) alone over the winter. About 3 weeks ago I had to jump it to a start due to a flat battery and drove it about 5 miles. Got it back home and discovered that the battery would not hold a charge. Yesterday I...

    Coolant

I have just done a lot of asking about this very subject and was told that the antifreeze in the coolant would still be apparent 15 years on but the inhibitors which protect against inner corrosion would be almost non existent after such a long period. Four and a half litres of MB coolant costs...

Snapped timing chain - SLK 230K

Hi I have been led to believe that when a timing chain snaps it's normally down to something else such as a vacuum pump dropping in bits and getting caught up in the gubbings. That said I would have a good reputable Indie have a look at it and then make a decision while he has the engine in...

First Merc: Whats should the temperature be?

I think your temp gauge is on the blink. As stated 80-100 is normal. 85-90 you burn carbon and blow it out the exhaust. So by design you aren't burning any, so you might be all clogged up. But I think your gauge is faulty

    Tuning OM606

Hi Does anyone know the original 0-60mph spec for the 1994-5 E300D Multi-valve. To my thinking if I have got the engine somewhere close to how it used to be I shouldn't be too far off the original spec. BTW on a flat duel carriageway out of a layby I timed it at 13 seconds on two seperate runs...

    Vibration.....

Fred Just for the record the BMW was restricted at 250KMH if that converts to 141MPH then so be it, the sod wouldn't go any faster, I did try. Then again my ex boss and I, after visiting a knocking shop in Frankfurt drove back to Stuttgart at 4 in the morning wearing a 911 Carrera, he was too...

    Vibration.....

I used to be a speed freak living in Germany so many a fast mile has sped by. High speed vibrations are very hard to pinpoint as you are finding out. It could be lots of things. A BMW 525 which I often threw down the Munich - Garmisch autobahn at 150mph had a rattle at a similar speeds that...

    Mileage

Just a quickie Since changing the timing chain, resetting the pump timing to spec and getting the injectors sorted plus an air and fuel filter renewal my mileage has improved from ca 320 miles per 50 litres to ca 400 miles per 50 litres. My driving style has not changed though, or my lead boot...

    Oil Pressure

Hi Ian What could the reason be for this difference in idle oil pressures. My old 300D was nearly always a rock solid 3.0 bar whereas my E300D idles at 1.5 bar but always shoots up to 3.0 when a little gas is applied. I was told low idle pressure could and normally does indicate big end wear...

    Plonkers

Hi What's the real name for these things. I am in Yorkshire don't forget, here names for things can be a bit odd but straightforward, - the diesel plonks on those metal bits - kind of thing, hence plonkers Anyway do you concur that if these things are burnt they can cause nailing. Or could...

    Plonkers

Hi I was talking to an old diesel guy today about nailing (pinking) He said there is another thing to consider and that is the "plonkers." On some engines there is a pyramid type thing on the top of the piston on to which the injector sprays the fuel thus spreading the fuel evenly onto the top...

    Engine Pinking and Timing Chain

Hi dieselman The guy who did the injectors guarantees they are set bang on, balance, pop and spray patten. I also drove around for about 20 miles then checked for fuel and/or compression leaks (bubbles) of which there were none. To be honest I suspect that the injectors need to be "run in" but...
