Spoke with another ex-MB tech today, he reckons that when the SBC equipped cars were going in for service, they should have all been reset back to 0 each time and that would all but nullify the problems. I suppose the theory is, it never reaches "timed out" which would then display the red brake...

Update: Took the E class in to Glynn ( Welcome To Mercedes Specialist ) yesterday for the "service brake - visit workshop" malfunction. Counter was reset to 0. The SBC had registered an amzing 428,000+ activations/pedal presses over its 91,000mi and 10 years! I know the SBC will need relacement...
