    W203 - opinions?

Hello, My wife asked me to look into a W203 automatic (budget around £2.5k). Looking around the usual places I noticed there are several with less than 100k miles: is there some particularly expensive maintenance due by then? Timing chain perhaps? Would be interested to know more about what to...

    Cost of replacing door? (W202)

Well, Dent Devils didn't bother to reply. The lady who crashed into my car went AWOL - as expected. (add expletives) I called the insurance to find out what my options are. Just by describing the damage, the system flagged it as a write off so now I'm divided between scrapping it for peanuts...

    Cost of replacing door? (W202)

Today a lady reversed on the side of my C200 and made a rather large dent on the N/S passenger door. She offered to pay for the repair instead of making a claim but I'm pretty sure that once she sees the bill she'll change her mind. As I don't have much time to get a quote before the weekend...

    W202 C200 suspensions

Well, it's not feeling unsafe, just a too soft for me. But as I said, I'm used to firmer rides. It's very likely the shocks could do with replacing if it gets too bad, but I followed my wife driving and there was no bounding on the wheels when going through potholes. Now I really think it's a...

    W202 C200 suspensions

I'm sure the wife prefers it as it is, unfortunately (she drives it the most, after all)

    Alpine summer destination

If that's snow you're after, I'm afraid you won't find any in the summer. I come from the Piedmont region, which is close to Mont Blanc/Monte Bianco: no snow from April onwards, normally. That's the highest mountain in the Alps. You might be luckier around Switzerland, but I doubt you'll find...

    W202 C200 suspensions

Is this what you are talking about? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdWdEL-raB4 To be honest I don't think there's a problem there: steering is good. It's the whole car that feels too much of a magic carpet to me. But the mechanic did a road test and said it's fine, so I doubt he'd have missed...

    W202 C200 suspensions

Well, the car came back from the (B) service and MOT and the suspensions are fine! The mechanic detected a slight play in the steering bushes but otherwise it was fine. Surprised as I expected the ride to be firmer, but probably I'm used to sportier set ups.

Good point! Didn't think of that ...

    W202 C200 suspensions

I drove my wife's car yesterday on the motorway and found it to be too unstable even at 60mph. It felt as if the suspensions are too soft, but she hadn't noticed as she drives in town only (hardly over 40mph). Although the mileage is relatively low (80k) I guess after ~16 years the shocks are...

    W202 polybelt replacement quote

It's now more or less sorted. The initial quote of £220 was reduced to £140 with the use of aftermarket parts. Having been told that MB parts are expensive, I went for option B but when I turned up I was told they made a mistake and I had been quoted for replacement of belt and pulley only, not...

    W202 polybelt replacement quote

Mine is apparently Dec '98, registered in March '99. Based on the number plate, Euro Car Parts added the absorber and that's why I started to wonder. I might stop by the local MB garage to check the correct parts against the VIN ...

    W202 polybelt replacement quote

Uhm, I took a peek as I got home and the shock absorber is missing. It actually looks like it's never been there. Is there one supposed to be there or is it specific only for certain models?

    W202 polybelt replacement quote

Thanks Graeme. The garage quoted about £29 + VAT for the genuine MB belt so I can see where the quote comes from. I'll need to check as I'm not convinced the tensioner needs changing (the car only has 78k miles), given it shouldn't take more than half hour I might do the job myself instead. ;)...

    W202 polybelt replacement quote

Hello, The poly belt in my wife's W202 needs replacing and the local non-Merc garage quoted me over £200 for OE parts (belt and tensioner). That looks a bit steep to me, given the belt alone could be changed in 10 minutes. Does anybody know how much I should expect to pay using non-OE parts? I...

    new with old c200

Got my wife one last month, with just 77k miles, FMBSH, only a small patch of rust on one wing. I have her permissions to use it (now and then). Mine is in decent state, although on investigating some signs later on, I found out that it must have had the rear window replaced (small bits of...
