Are you sure it only has one thermostat? Ok i know yours is petrol but iv heard some of the diesels have 2 themostats so it may be worth checking on oe bmw parts page.

If you think you have contamination of your engine oil you can send a sample of your oil for lab testing for around £40 just google oil sampling. We do this alot in work they can also tell you if anything is breaking down long before it will show signs.

I think if the injector was stuck closed it would still start but run badly if stuck open you would suffer with low rail pressure, air in fuel lines may be the problem and also check wiring plug on top of injector as if ones comes loose the engine will not start. Il say from the start iv never tried any of the engine cleaners but iv taken off lots of diesel inlet manifolds, egr valves ect and you have to scrape the oil off with a scraper its that thick and goey even using a steam cleaner at 150oc its hard work so im a bit sceptical about these cleaning...

If the cruise control stops working then i would think its logged a fault, this is pure guess work but if the abs light comes on it sounds like the car is loosing its speed signal or the signal is being corrupted and thats whats telling the transmission to change down. I would get it plugged in...
