Gearbox is now out so he can check the flywheel which he is sure is the cause of the problem. Apparently the back of the sensor makes contact with the flywheel and if the flywheel is damaged then it will chew up the sensor. Is going to get the gearbox checked at the same time as it isn't worth...

You're so right - it's really frustrating when something like this happens. If I ever do manage to get the car back on the road I will definitely let everyone know what the problem was in case it helps someone else with the same issue.

When they took the car for a test drive it cut out when decelerating - something it never did before.
