1996 W202 Alarm - how do you stop it?

A postscript, should anyone be interested. Disconnected the alarm (it will activate, whether the key is in the ignition or not), wrapped it in many, many towels and blankets to mute its banshee wailing and checked the engine started without the alarm in circuit. It did. It was then a simple task...

1996 W202 Alarm - how do you stop it?

Thanks. I'll leave the boot (tailgate) open while the battery's disconnected. I don't have the key for the alarm unfortunately. Some more experimenting tomorrow I think... after the neighbours have finished their lie-ins.

1996 W202 Alarm - how do you stop it?

Thanks - good point! I suppose I could disconnect the alarm/siren unit, cover it with blankets to muffle the sound temporarily and see if the car starts without it. If the car starts then I guess I can go ahead and do something terminal (no pun intended) to the alarm to shut it up!

1996 W202 Alarm - how do you stop it?

Is there a quick way to deactivate the siren? The auto electrician suggested putting the alarm unit (unplugged of course) in a bucket of water! Presumably so it would short out and fail or the sound would at least be muffled. Seems a bit extreme, but desperation is beginning to set in!

1996 W202 Alarm - how do you stop it?

Hi, I have a 1996 W202 C180 Estate. I'm trying to disconnect the battery so I can replace a failed alternator. However, when I take off the battery earth (I mean the main 12V battery in the boot), after about five seconds the alarm starts sounding. Replace the earth and it stops immediately. If...

Petition to the FIA - for what it's worth

Me too. Won't make the slightest bit of difference, I suspect, but feel better for having some outlet for barely controlled disgust!

Anti-McLaren / Pro Ferrari strip Lewis of win

The FIA statement, just copied off the ITV F1 website: ' Hamilton was deemed to have "cut the chicane and gained an advantage", thereby breaching Article 30.3(a) of the sporting regulations and Appendix L chapter 4 Article 2 (g) of the International Sporting Code.' Presumably the stewards...

    External temperature gauge fault

For anyone else whose car has the same fault, I thought I'd mention the cure I found. Went through all the fuses in the box, cleaned the ends with sandpaper and the correct outside temperature reading returned. Funny how it's sometimes the simplest things that make the difference...

    MX5 Whats it worth?

Try the "It's an absolute bargain and after a quick tidy-up I'll make a fortune selling it on" line. Perhaps with a little "Think of all the shoes you could buy with the profit" temptation thrown in. Then, er, 'forget' to sell it on...

    MX5 Whats it worth?

Can I add my name to the list of interested parties? Currently undergoing mid-life crisis, so thinking of parting with the 1994 W124 E280 Estate and going off on an MX5 tangent instead. Of ourse, I would advertise the E280 on the forum, but don't yet have the requisite number of posts;)

    Yet another scam on pistonheads

Seen exactly the same scam, word for word apart from the price and the car (it was an MX5 for £2000, allegedly), also on Pistonheads. It was posted three times, removed each time after complaints but then accepted again by Pistonheads. Finally removed after the lady who originally and genuinely...

Anyone seen any good number plates on cars lately?

Sitting in a traffic jam in Bath today, saw a blue W124 E300TD in a driveway, with the registration L30 0TD.

Help! W124 TE Estate seat folding??

Don't you have to remove the headrests before the seat backs will fold down?

What was your first ever car?

Mine was a 1960 Mini, sliding front windows, floor-mounted push button starter. Pale blue with a white roof and I think registered 871 HUL. It was dreadful - glass-fibre floor pans, rear suspension welded solid, must have been a very dodgy MOT. Paid £110 for it (while a student) and sold it...

    Pleased with my car :)

I must admit I've grown rather fond of my big old barge - 1994 E280 Estate. It was an eBay chancer - bought for just over a grand, with a short MOT, but repaid my confidence about a fortnight later by passing the MOT without anything required. Since then, it's proven invaluable for all sorts of...

I agree with PJH. It looks like a bitsa, using E-Type and US Chrysler parts, amongst others. Presumably the chap in the matching cap is its 'proud' creator.
