It was a few years back now, it was on an original A-Class, my mate researched where to send it, possibly the ECU Doctor in Plymouth, he let Shane at MB-Tech know the information etc and MB-Tech removed, packaged it up and sent it off for repair etc. I see there's a ECU doctor in Widnes now...

Try MB-Tech in Warrington www.mercedesservicingwarrington.co.uk They sent a ECU off for repair a while back for a mate and refitted it etc

My 1st port of call would be to find your local indi, phone them, ask if you get the car to them how much would Star diagnosis would be ? and if they diagnosed the fault, is it a fixed price for repair ? I would then get a cheap breakdown cover, call them out, hopefully they can fix or diagnose...

I had a ECU replaced in a Audi A4, once replaced the car needed to go into Audi to pair up the ECU to the car. I'd phone the ECU doctor place first, maybe then remove the ECU and send it to them for testing (£50) if it's found faulty they will repair for £200.

Could you no join a cheap breakdown cover, wait 24 hours, call them out, hopefully they'll get the car running, if not ask them to take the car to a garage. I have www.startrescue.co.uk , not used them yet so can't comment on the service but the reviews are ok
