    W163 ML 500 | Cracked block?

Thank you, I've got a spare cap in the boot now :)

    W163 ML 500 | Cracked block?

So far so good I think. I did pretty much that and it now seems to be behaving normally. I also replaced with a brand new cap, which I have a sneaking suspicion may have been the issue all along...

tapping noise when in gear but stationary ...

I had that and it turned out to be a loose mount which was causing the muffler to bang against the body of the car. I believe a certain amount of noise when in drive and pulling against the brake while stationary is actually quite normal, or at least that is what I've been told by my mechanic...

    W163 ML 500 | Cracked block?

Possible success. Ran it up to temperature and loosened the return hose from the heater matrix. Quite a bit of air rushed out, then boiling hot coolant. I've taken it for a short drive and so far so good... ! p.s. Yes I did burn myself, but it was worth it.

    W163 ML 500 | Cracked block?

Will do that ASAP. It's now out of the garage which was the main objective but clearly not drive able for any distance...

    W163 ML 500 | Cracked block?

Interesting suggestions re blocked radiator and bleeding with the nose in the air. Is there an easy way to diagnose a blocked radiator?

    W163 ML 500 | Cracked block?

True, I will get it done it's just a case of waiting for the kit to be available. It's full of de-ionised water at the moment as I've been flushing it over and over again (It sat drained with the heads off for about 6 months) but I'll fill it with 50/50 G05 this afternoon.

    W163 ML 500 | Cracked block?

I've replaced a few host clamps now and touch wood I think it's behaving itself a little better. I'm still not sure about the expansion tank cap though, which is due today. It does not appear to be losing any coolant and the car does not have an LPG system fitted. If problems persist I'll get...

    W163 ML 500 | Cracked block?

Thank you for all the replies. Leak down test seems sensible and a new rad cap should be arriving today. If it turns out it was that all along then at least I learnt how to replace the head gaskets, and I'll also keep a stock of caps in the boot... I also think that having the heads and block...

    W163 ML 500 | Cracked block?

Hmm they think it's worth £1.2K. No doubt they would reduce that once I turn up though.

    W163 ML 500 | Cracked block?

Not had a leakdown test done, will be doing so this evening hopefully! I don't believe my car has an EGR cooler, certainly don't remember removing or refitting it anyway :)

    W163 ML 500 | Cracked block?

Thanks for the reply. Thermostat was changed around 6 months ago but I do have a spare which I'll try. Heaters are blowing hot. The water pump looks original although it has only a tiny bit of play and is quiet. Was planning to replace it anyway. The cylinders aren't lined (if you mean...

C55 wants to stall and sometimes it does.

I recently rescued a friends Integra Type R that had been sat for a year. Initially it wouldn't idle at all. Once the oil was changed and it had a good thrashing it was fine. Cars like to be driven and sulk when you neglect them for a while :)

    W163 ML 500 | Cracked block?

I appreciate diagnosing these kinds of things is very difficult over the internet, but I'm wondering if anyone has any bright ideas before I give up on the infernal thing. Around 7 months ago head gasket failure was diagnosed due to over pressurisation of the cooling system causing coolant to...

    Leather seat conditioner?

I would steer clear of any "creams" as all they do is sit on the surface and smell nice. The best product I've used so far is called leatherique. Very lengthy process that must be done on a baking hot day, or you need to leave a heater in the car all day/night, but its's the only product I've...

    Timing an M113

CO2 in the cooling tank less than 30s after starting from cold. Coolant would eventually leave via the expansion tank cap if left to run at speed and the top rad hose collapsed when cooling down. Bubbles via the return after shutting down as well. Considered a lot of possibilities before going...

    What MPG are people getting?

I had a 64 plate C220 CDI "AMG Sport Edition" with the 7G+ box and got around 40mpg. Mostly on the M1. I was never overly impressed with the fuel economy to be honest.

    Timing an M113

I don't suppose anyone has managed to remove the timing case cover of an M113 5.0 whilst its still in the car, without removing the front end of the car? It's a w163 ML 500. Both head gaskets changed but think it's skipped a tooth and the only way I can see of timing this engine properly is...

W163 Coolant Loss via expansion tank

Decided to take the engine out and do the head gaskets myself, along with a minor rebuild. That is if there are no cracks anywhere that not weldable. Expect a comprehensive write up if this goes ahead as planned. Too many old cars are scrapped because of stuff like this.

W163 Coolant Loss via expansion tank

Might give it another go. It seems to be a one way leak of gas into the coolant so hard to see how it will ever get a chance to set without being blown out of the way. If it was leaking coolant into the oil then I could see how it would work. Still only £12 so why not.
