Yes I'm pretty sure it is the main battery as it is the original so 9 years old. I'm in Newcastle upon Tyne and I know of one indie which is the one who said that the fault was caused by the need for a software update. lol

I had a Becker unit and found it to be rubbish. So difficult to use and map updates cost a fortune so I sold it on ebay and bought a new TomTom Go 620 for the same price that I sold the Becker for. Free updates for life and much easier to use, A better system all round.

I agree, it sounds either mechanical or electrical but I don't fancy putting grease or oil through the "letterbox". I'll just have to see how it goes. Putting a cleaning disc though it won't cure that problem but I doubt it has ever been done before and shouldn't do any harm.
