Buying my first Mercedes please help! C220 CDI

I think a couple of the more common faults are worn suspension components (possible failure in an MOT) and broken springs. These are more difficult to spot without putting it on a ramp and having someone who knows what to look for inspect it. It's possible for broken springs to go unnoticed...

Buying my first Mercedes please help! C220 CDI

Check the wheel arches for rust or signs of poorly repaired rust. Check there are no warning lights (this is an MOT failure) or warning messages when the car is driven. Take off the oil filler cap and check the appearance of the oil - white sludge is a bad sign.

Mercedes dealer reviews - how do they rate?

That's what I would have thought, which would make you expect that all dealers would get a one-star review. So maybe it's surprising that Mercedes Plymouth gets 4.2 out of five. Perhaps there are some people who are willing to recognise good service, as well as complaining about bad service. I...

Mercedes dealer reviews - how do they rate?

You're right that this wouldn't be very scientific. It would just provide a quick comparison of how other customers had rated particular dealers. For example: Mercedes Plymouth gets a rating of of 4.2 (see page here) Mercedes Southampton gets 2.8 (see page here) You'd have to leave it...

Mercedes dealer reviews - how do they rate?

I've just discovered that Google has ratings for Mercedes dealers, based on reviews of each individual dealer. (Sorry if this is well known - I've only just come across it.) For example, here's the page for reviews of Mercedes Southampton. What I'm wondering is whether there's a list...

how many hrs to change seals in rear transmission

A friend has a 2005 Prius and each year when it's serviced it seems to be about £200 in total with generally no faults reported, except perhaps a light bulb, for which they don't charge.

how many hrs to change seals in rear transmission

I was quoted £200 by an independent Mercedes specialist to change the glowplugs on my W203: £20 per glowplug and the rest in labour and VAT. I have read reports in the past, though, that if the glowplugs shear off as they're being removed and fall into the cylinder, the job can work out much...

how many hrs to change seals in rear transmission

Probably not a great deal of help but in 2008 I had the differential seal replaced on my w203, as it was also oozing slight traces of oil. The Mercedes dealer charged around £250 labour, plus VAT. I can't tell how many hours that was from the bill but even at the hourly rates charged nine years...

    There's always one.

Interesting to read this Smith System, apparently aimed at American drivers. Point two says: "Having the whole picture means that you are doing your part to keep your vehicle as safe as possible while moving 1000ft a second." That seems like good advice. But of course the driving environment...

Lacquer peeling on four year old Jupiter red A class

There seem to be loads of people with problems on red paintwork. Have a look at this thread. As mentioned above by i-CONICA, Manchester seem to have a good record in dealing with it if that's anywhere near you.

Price drop - £1990. One owner from new, W203 C220 auto

In March 2001, we flew to Bremen, courtesy of Mercedes-Benz, to collect a new C220 Classic automatic in dark blue. Some of these C-classes were beginning to be made in South Africa, so it was a pity they didn’t offer to fly us down there. But we had a nice break in Bremen and a tour of the...

    Dealing with Tailgators

When my children were learning to drive, I gave them the following advice. When driving, always remember that all the other cars are being driven by robots who have been programmed to try and annoy you, or to trick or bully you into making mistakes. They aren't actually humans so you...

    Dealing with Tailgators

From my personal experience, (and with apologies for repeating myself!) I'd warn against indicating while slowing down and changing lanes in this kind of situation. As I described in post 118 above in this thread, this kind of manoeuvre can easily turn tailgating into a collision. In the...

W204 C63 steering wheel off centre..

My W203 was the same for quite a while until I got it done on a Hunter machine. For a long time I tried to persuade myself that the problem was the road camber but a correct alignment proved me wrong. Most people will know instinctively if the alignment is wrong. You also said your garage...

    MOT trap for the unwary.

I'm not so sure that it's a nonsense, exactly. Misleading perhaps, but only if people misinterpret what an MOT is. My understanding is that an MOT confirms that at a particular hour on a certain day a vehicle met the legal requirements. What it doesn't do (and what a lot of people seem to...
