    1997 SLK 230k auto. Missfire after 1800rpm

The last garage to have it says they have STAR but Ive not seen any report. The codes given were the same as the codes I found & the same as the mobile auto electrician found. They did a compression test, again they didnt give me any figures but said that compression was good. The last garage...

Hiya mate, Im sorry to inform you that the problem still exists on my car too. I have not been able to get it to a proper Merc specialist but I think people are looking at it from the wrong angle. Its difficult to explain but here goes...... They are getting the car to missfire, then...

    1997 R170 is this a timing problem?

Just out of curiosity, I have been told (not by someone who was trying to sell me his services by the way, this is a guy who says he once worked for Mercedes) That STAR is not always the best system for a car of this age as STAR is digital & my old SLK having the round plug is analogue...

    1997 R170 is this a timing problem?

Thinking about it....the throttle body is quite noisy, a medium to high pitched hum. Could this possibly be an indication of a fault with it or are they generally noisy?

    1997 R170 is this a timing problem?

Unfortunately these were not from a STAR machine but the garage who did these checks, couldnt find the fault "say" they took the car another garage, belonging to a friend who has STAR & they only found the same codes??? To be honest, I think they are talking rubbish but I have no proof...

    1997 R170 is this a timing problem?

At the moment I dont have a fuel pressure gauge. The car does missfire but has not backfired & there are definately no missfires on cylinders 1 & 4. Thats why I think it cant be a timing fault as surely all the cylinders would be out of sync?? I cant take it out as its been playing up so...

    1997 R170 is this a timing problem?

Ive not checked fuel pressure yet but I thought that would affect all the cylinders? The test carried out over different rpm ranges showed cylinders 1 & 4 to never miss a beat....stumped .

    1997 R170 is this a timing problem?

Hi, approaching this issue from a different angle (previous posthttp://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/engine/166465-1997-slk-230k-auto-missfire-after-1800rpm.html ) If a 230K has a timing problem, i.e slipped timing chain etc, would you get a missfire on ALL cylinders? Still trying to find the fault...

    1997 SLK 230k auto. Missfire after 1800rpm

Another auto electrician / diagnostics guy walking away scratching his head. This one thinks because the missfire sometimes starts at 1500 rpm, sometimes 2000 rpm plus, sometimes it does not missfire at all especially on tick over or if its revved really hard........faulty / clogged...
