W124 Potentiometer fun - I guess this explains my rough idle!

New pot installed. Oddly, at the most extreme angle possible, I can only get it to 5.6V on pin 1&2. That is literally the highest voltage reading I can achieve 🤔 It has cleaned up my idle alright, though I still got a case of the 'putt putts' round back. The journey continues...

W124 Potentiometer fun - I guess this explains my rough idle!

Yeah, scribed before removing. I think the old one in the picture is a generic brand; I forked out for a Bosch from Amazon.de - €160 - so have high hopes for it. Should arrive in a day or two.

Gonna need more than colouring in with a pencil!

W124 Potentiometer fun - I guess this explains my rough idle!

After seeing the state of my potentiometer, I'm amazed my car actually runs, never mind hunting at idle! Resistance and voltage were so all over the place, I thought my multimeter was banjaxed!

W124 Idiotic mistake. Missed timing chain cover bolt when lifting head and... 'CRACK'

Really decent of you, thanks. I'm in Dublin though! (Or 'the other Liverpool' as a friend in work would say)

W124 Idiotic mistake. Missed timing chain cover bolt when lifting head and... 'CRACK'

Well that was interesting. So far so good, running well. Slightly hesitant starting and hunting a bit at idle, but thats another thread for another day. New dual fuse OVP relay on the way so that might help. The guide rail pins tapped in tight with no drama. When pushed home they seat in a...

Good call there. Is Dirko the Elring stuff? It sounds familiar. I think when I picked up the head gasket set they threw in a tube.

W124 Idiotic mistake. Missed timing chain cover bolt when lifting head and... 'CRACK'

I was thinking about achieving the same end by different means and using a small round file to ever so slightly increase the diameter of the hole, then as you say, fit the pin and epoxy it in

Here's how we're looking right now.

W124 Idiotic mistake. Missed timing chain cover bolt when lifting head and... 'CRACK'

The bolt that led to the whole sorry story is not the bolt by the sensors, it's one of the three spline head bolts at the timing chain cover - the one that is slightly obscured by the timing chain guide as you're looking down the line of the timing chain. Bellow, as it happens I did plate the...

W124 Idiotic mistake. Missed timing chain cover bolt when lifting head and... 'CRACK'

I know it's far from ideal, but for better or for worse, I jb-welded the front, got it flat and everything lines up. I figure if the repair stands up to hammering the pin in, it should be good for holding the guide rail. I asked the welder who looked at it about vibration and he reckoned if...

W124 Idiotic mistake. Missed timing chain cover bolt when lifting head and... 'CRACK'

Really appreciate the help. I've bought from MSL before with no issues, I'll ask them for a quote on shipping, but I'm not too hopeful it will be economical. I'm also still looking out for a head locally. I tried a few guys who helped me out with stuff before, but they're not keen on breaking a...

That would be ideal - listing says doesn't ship to Ireland, but I'll contact the seller right now. Thanks for the tip, much appreciated.

W124 Idiotic mistake. Missed timing chain cover bolt when lifting head and... 'CRACK'

I hear ya, I really do! I've made a few calls and I'm watching ebay and the small ads. But no luck - as yet - with an alternative head; and shipping prices and logistics across the Irish Sea are nuts at the moment. I might check with a pal in Belfast, could maybe get one shipped there. When the...

W124 Idiotic mistake. Missed timing chain cover bolt when lifting head and... 'CRACK'

I would say absolutely, were the casting not so thin on the timing chain cover - but maybe it would be possible to plate it though? 🤔 Bit agricultural, maybe! but for now, I'm not so concerned about neatness. When I get it back from the shop I'll get a few pics from different angles.

W124 Idiotic mistake. Missed timing chain cover bolt when lifting head and... 'CRACK'

Quick update - left the head with an engineers outfit today. At least I caught it in good time - there is absolute minimum warping. So whatever the guy takes off the head he'll also take off the broken piece. His opinion is that he wouldn't weld it as it's such a thin wall at the front cover...

W124 Idiotic mistake. Missed timing chain cover bolt when lifting head and... 'CRACK'

For sure - new guide rail going back in, new sensors etc. Would have been a by-the-numbers job if I hadn't had taken that chunk out of the timing chain cover :(

W124 Idiotic mistake. Missed timing chain cover bolt when lifting head and... 'CRACK'

Alas, it's worse than that. I had no problem at all removing the guide pins - I missed a timing chain cover bolt when lifting the head.
