I went around the car this morning to have a proper look at things. Three key things that I noticed: She has had replacement wings. There are no side indicators on the car...so I called the Mercedes agent who looked after her who confirmed that the car had a full re spray with them in 2009...

I only drove it about 20 kms today as I borrowed the trade plates to get it home. On Monday I'll get my own plates then go for a good drive. I've had a manual estate before (E280 S124) and although it was nice to play with the gearbox my E200 auto S124 was a much nicer (easier?) drive...

Thank you Moth - It was one of those impulse buys as I was not looking for one (as I thought they were out of my price range) but this was simply too good to miss. I have had a few W124 (S124) estates and they were great and I can't help but think that the values of these last hand assembled...

(Thread resurrection....really useful info here) That's very interesting WDB....I'm chasing a set that advertises them as ET34 (on an 8x16) I thought that this was the correct wheel that the 500E ran...so is the ET34 an aftermarket job? Many thanks, Dave

For me it's the heritage of the W124 (S124, A124, C124...) series. One of the best selling cars of all time. Over engineered for its day and the aesthetics stand out and, in my opinion, are maturing wonderfully with age in what has rapidly become a 'sea of mediocrity' amongst car design. Oh. And...

Back on topic I have been working in Switzerland where the A124 is quite highly prized for a myriad of reasons. Long story short I bumped into a chap selling a genuine E320 Sportline A124 with very rare Getrag 5 speed manual. Now I know many feel that a manual Merc of this type is an oddity...

I have heard some horror stories and some wives tales too......the plugs on the V6 petrol are not an 'engine out' scenario but do need the manifold removed to get at the rear ones. That said, service interval on plugs is 72k miles so I have some time to go on that one...And its a chain driven...

K&N's are standard fitment on a variety of 'performance' cars - mainly petrol engines (not diesel - as in that report above). My Caterham has a pair as standard fit. If you 'over lube' them after washing them through etc. then you may run the risk of oil being drawn in and over/on the mass air...
