Thinking of returning to the fold. Sort of.

I took a smart roadster out for a test drive yesterday. It was fun. An indecent amount of fun in fact, that back end loves to kick out. So I'm giving serious though to buying one, but I've never bought a new or even vaguely new car before. The lowest prices in the dealership are...

    New car

Well not new, but new to me. The 190 would need a new engine to go back on the road, and is as good as sold as is. So its been replaced with a 1996 ford scorpio 2.3 ultima. Only had it 2 days, but I like it so far. Very big and lots of toys.

    B*lls

Well I did the head gasket again, taking a lot more care over the scraping this time, and it seems to have failed. Again. Symptoms are grey/white smoke, mayonnaise under the filler cap, coolant level dropping rather a lot, and seemingly higher than usual pressure in the cooling system...

    Thinking of buying a W202.

At the moment I have a 190E 2.6, with a blown head gasket, and a dog of a BMW 320i. I'm going to fix the merc and run the bmw for a bit, but after this I doubt I'll trust the merc and I dislike the bmw. So I'm thinking of upgrading to a W202, and I'd like to know what they are like - I'd...

    190E 2.6 oil weep

My 190E 2.6 weeps oil from the front of the engine. I'm not sure exactly where its coming from, but I think its the head gasket directly under the distributor. The cooling system isn't getting any oil in, and the oil isn't getting any coolant in, so I think the gasket is fine otherwise...

    Crankcase breather question

On the 6 cylinder petrol engine used from the mid 80s to the mid 90s - Certainly the lump in E300 W124s and 2.6 190Es, does the crankcase breather have its own filter before the air cleaner housing, or is it just that little tube going from the rocker cover to the air cleaner housing? Trying...

    Burning oil

My 190E has a little habit drinking oil at prolonged speed on the motorway - yesterday it drank about 500ml in 30 miles at 80-90. The oil light came on, I happened to be near an exit so I went to the nearest petrol station and put a litre of oil in. On the way home I just sat at 60-70 all...

    Ooooh its all powerful again.

I had my ATF and filter changed at a garage yesterday. What a difference. I used to avoid kickdown because it took over a second to spin up and felt like clutch slip with the transmission, sounded good but just lacked power. Now its powerful enough to spin the back wheels in the wet kicking...

Can comand be retrofitted into a 190E

I'm sure this was mentioned or attempted by V12 a while ago. Does anyone know if a dinosaur like the 190 can take comand at all, and how much work would be needed to fit it?

    Transmission clunk

This is on a 190E 2.6 auto. At low speed, such as around town and car parks, I get a substantial clunk from the back of the car when I change gear. I can feel and hear it, passengers comment on it. The thing is, it feels and sounds like its coming from the back and not the autobox. Anyone...

    Reserve light and fuel gauge

When I totally fill my 190E the gauge never reads totally full. I know it is because the garage pump cuts off, but the fuel gauge reads just over 3/4 full. I've also had the needle right down the bottom of the fuel gauge, but the reserve light has never come on. What I want to know is...

    Wheels rubbing in the arches

One of the front wheels on my 190E has been rubbing in the arches since I took the tyres back up to a standard size 60 profile - they used to be 55 profile. It rubs going over most bumps. It is lowered, but only seems to be running on the drivers side front wheel. Can you get pads to jack...

    Ecotek Powerboost foam

I treated my 190E with powerboost foam. Now its playing up. While I was treating it the revs stayed at 3000 rpm and didn't want to drop back down. I took it for a little 15 mile drive after letting it cool down for a half hour (was getting a bit warm) and now it idles at 1000 rpm, builds up...

    \o/ Its good now.

Well after fitting new brake pads all round, 4 new tyres, and 4 new shock absorbers, my 190E now handles like a merc. Nice and smooth, with enough feel to be pleasant while still retaining that "floating on a cloud feeling". the front shocks turned out to be one of those satisfying jobs as...

    190E coolant sensor

According to the haynes book I need to take the coolant sensor out when I fill the cooling system to relieve a possible airlock. Anyone know which sensor this is? There are a few in the cylinder head, I think it may be the one right at the back with a four prong plug.

    Checking the ATF level

Today I called up the local autobox specialist to enquire about getting the ATF changed. They said it would cost about 90 quid all in, and its probably not necessary, and then explained I should check the level with the engine hot and running, and make sure it has the right amount in before I...

    Goodridge lines

Are stainless braided lines worth it on cars? I've always had them on my bikes, but the bikes have needed them. My hoses are looking a bit tired and will be due replacement soon.

    snake oil

Whilst skimming around ebay I saw this. What do you kids think of it? I'm tempted to dig out the compression tester and see how my 190E is after 12 years and 111000 miles of abuse, but you do think this could work, or is it more likely to go and clog the oilways leading to the head?
