Has anybody got an idea where I can lay my hands on a Workshop manual for a 1989 300se. I need to replace the hydraulic lifters and would like a little guidance.

Does anybody know if you can adjust the tappets on a 89 300se, and what the gap should be

I think I have cured it!!! I took the two relays out in front of the fuse box and gave the pins a good clean. Since then Eileen has been starting first turn of the key.

Mine doesn't run rich. I get about 30mpg on my run to work, which is about 40 miles. It goes up a lot on short runs or in traffic. Being in Africa, we don't have the same issues with traffic as you do in the UK.

I have just purchased a workshop manual on ebay. So as soon as it arrives I will start work on Eileen. (car not wife) car is nicer to me. I am going to start with the cold start injector. Thinking about it. I might change that on Eileen as well. (the wife)

Let me know how you get on. My experience off garages is that they do exactly what I suggested. That's replace parts until they get the right one. But it cost a lot more when they do it. I had a 280se. That had the same problem. Then one day it just went away. Perhaps I will apply the same...

Hi. The engine runs fine accept cold start problem. There isn't any smoke. What will the plugs look like if it is burning oil?

Apart from having a cold start problem, I have tappet noise a 3000rpm. I am wondering if it might be an advance / retard problem, as the engine runs very well and only starts ticking at higher revs. Does anyone have any ideas.

Strangely enough I used to have a 280. That had the same problem. I am beginning to thing all old merc's don't like to get up in the morning. I am thinking of calling it Eileen. ( After the wife) Where might I find the said valve?
