hi paul, did you get a solution to this problem. my new to me 2000 e 320 cdi has started doing this also. won't start no matter how long it's cranked for. leave it an hour or so and it's as if nothing's wrong. it seems to be fuel starvation so your cut off valve would seem a good place to start...
