    Alternative uses for ATF.

Was in the motor factors today, there was a green W124 outside too, so I bought two 1 litre cans of cheap ATF for £4 each. I'm outside with the bonnet of my W124 up and the other fellow comes up as starts asking "Burning oil?" and then he notices I'm tipping the ATF into the rocker filler...

    Insignificance.

A friend of mine asked me about some pictures that he remembered me having some years ago, so I trawled through the archives and dug them out. They are a set of accurately rendered models of the planets of the solar system etc, all DONE TO SCALE. Enjoy.

Slashdot | New Jaguar XJ Suffers Blue Screen of Death also at Jaguar XJ Super Sport goes all Blue Screen of Death on us | Crave | CNET UK Modern cars are no mere mechanical devices. They're pervasively monitored and controlled by dozens of computers linked by internal vehicular networks so...

    Acceleration curves.

I drive a 1991 W124 300d with the 6 cylinder 12 valve non turbo engine, and 4 speed auto box, in which 1st is rarely used. Auto box is important. Unless it is a hill start, I give it a whiff of throttle, somewhere between 1,000 and 1,200 RPM depending on road, grade, etc, and leave the throttle...

    Bak in the jug agane

I am the first person to admit that the first draft of anything that I type (which is also usually the final draft...) is replete with typos, grammatical errors and plain old fashioned mistakes... I am also not one to shy from the odd expletive or ten, or a bit of vernacular. However...

    MB diesels getting noisier?

As I wafted past a clean silver estate E320 CDI today, then came alongside it at the junction, then wafted down the road when the lights changed (nice day so all windows down) I was struck by how much noisier and more "diesel-ey****" the much newer E320 sounded, and mine is 20 years old with 20...

    Tank!

Well it sounded a bit like one.... Seems that after my epic exhaust bodge last week I neglected to tighten the flange bolts properly... Still, better than what I assumed, which was that the bodge job itself had simply fallen apart. So, point to add to the knowledgebase, exhaust flange...

How much did you pay? Secret? Or not?

Was talking to a chap today (was in the bank, reporting lost wallet complete with drivers licence and all plastic, then returned home to find the bloody thing down the side of the chair, so no plastic for 3/4 working days now... sigh) about cars and stuff, he's just bought a new (used) car, saw...

    WTD - W124 300d (2 valve) exhaust

This is for the 300 D, 2 valve engine, with twin 3-1 manifolds. I'm looking for the next (first) section of exhaust, 2 separate downpipes joining into one where the exhaust turns level to go back towards the rear of the car, and the union with the next section around where the passenger seats...

Ride quality, how do you quantify it?

I was talking to someone today (after having fixed the exhaust) about ride quality, the latest 300d, when coasting on the flat or downhill at 30mph feels like it is parked, even with the drivers window down, no noise, no vibration, no nothing, just waftiness. The conversation started because...

WTD to *rent* 8 hole 7x15 alloys with legal 195/65

Basically, have just bought a W124 with the above spec, but the alloys are a bit tired, so looking to rent a set of 4 suitable wheels are tyres so I can refurb my own alloys. Don't have the space to buy a spare set and store them, and don't see the point in buying 4 tyres when the ones I have...

    1991 E 300 D W124-603 sedan

My 3rd merc, (should have kept the 220se) and 2nd E300D (should have kept that one too) and I think I got lucky with this one (will post some pix later) as it has a few minor mechanical defects (the serp idler, small blow on zorst, "clack" when opening and closing driver door, and central...

Q re W124 603 diesel lower idler rocker

This is the aluminium jobbie that the LOWER end of the damper and spring attach to. I have noticed mine has a small hairline crack on the outside web at the damper end. I've ordered a replacement from GSF, due in tomorrow. Question is this, I have popped off the cover and can't quite see what...

Quick W124 603 viscous fan diesel query.

I've swapped out the idler pulley as the bearing was a bit gone. Got a damper too but the lower bolt won't retract far enough with the water pump pulley in the way. Query is this, is the 8mm allen / socket screw that holds the viscous fan coupling to the water pump a LEFT hand thread? TIA

Q re adding cruise control to W124 diesel

Just bought a base model W124 E300 D. Has few if any of the optional extras, but the only extra I would like and would make use of is the cruise control. Has anyone retrofitted a cruise control to one of these? Is is ridiculously complex (eg not just adding bits, but changing half the car)...
