Thanks Grober, have checked the chassis number and mine is 2020932, so not one that is affected. I have had a second and third opinion today and all agree with the tightener diagnosis, so I'll book it in to be done. Thanks

My CPS went a few months ago with exactly the same symptoms as you have got - it does not show up as a logged fault on the ECU, the engine just stops when it fails. Get it changed, especially if you are off on holiday!

Okay, just changed the image to a pdf (as I can label that!). I'm not trying to be cryptic, its just that there is a bearing going on one of the bits driven by the belt, and if I can go armed with which one is which I might be able to identify it a bit easier! Thanks everyone!

Can anyone ID all the components driven by the v belt on the front the V8 of my W202 C43? Starting top left and running clockwise, I think the first is is called a tightener pulley.

They are supposed to do that in park/neutral - if it revs above that in D it is fine.

Scottan, all W202s rust in the same places, but you may be lucky with the paint warranty. It is called mobilo life and lasts 30 years. Take it to a dealer for them to look at - they may say no if it hasn't got a full MB service history, but worth a try. My C43 has had new front wings, tops...
