    Thanks George Osborne !

Today's grey porridge will remain grey porridge however long it lasts, and I include my grey porridge C-class in that. The comment on inferior brakes, my Bentley has mechanically powered drum brakes which are designed to stop two tons of car from over 100 mph. There are no electronic gizmos or...

    Thanks George Osborne !

What does the energy use of classic cars have to do with the availability of a free VED? Those of us who choose to use pre 1974 or whatever cars would probably do so regardless, purely to be seen driving something different from the grey porridge most people have. As far as safety goes, old...

    company cars from the 80s

As you ask for the 80's, I'll go back no further, but: 1984 Escort 1.6GL 1986 Escort 1.6 Ghia 1989 Vauxhall Astra LXI Estate which was the version with the 1.8 fuel injected engine and imitation Recaro seats. It ended its days buried in the side of a Mk2 Escort who pulled out of a side turning...

Most respected motoring journalist or magazine

I am amazed that there is no mention of Motor Sport, and the work of William Boddy or Denis Jenkinson. What about Henry Manney III, the man who described the MG TF Midget as "Mrs Casey's dead cat slightly warmed over" Road and Track I think. The only motoring magazine that I read now is The...

Look up to me - I've been promoted

I'm sorry to have to inform you that the above quoted couplet does not rhyme. It should read "The working class can kiss my ass", an ass being a beast of burden. Oh sh-t! I'm supposed to be one of the Elite.

Do we need Trident or nuclear weapons?

You will have spotted that I said it wasn't perfect! Also, I think that I probably agree with your point about new technology breaking through, but I have had no experience of that type of work, since I have not been with a SME.

Do we need Trident or nuclear weapons?

You'll get your collar felt and that nice car crushed if you don't!

Do we need Trident or nuclear weapons?

Yeah, but that's even before I joined the industry! It still isn't perfect, by at least the range of an ICBM, but you can be assured that the MoD's procurement system is a lot better at its job now than it was in the sixties, and cost plus contracts, if not completely gone, are now only...

Do we need Trident or nuclear weapons?

I meant pumping large sums of money into the town of Barrow in order to support it in the case of the programme closure and the withdrawal of BAe entirely. After half a lifetime in the defence industry, and time spent with a first tier contractor to the programme being discussed I understand the...

Do we need Trident or nuclear weapons?

Yes and Yes. (BAE Systems pension fund needs the money to keep paying my pension). Seriously, just how much money would the govt have to pump into Barrow-in-Furness alone if the programme were to be cancelled in its entirety?

"Drop in used car values predicted"

Too right. If any of we pensioners have a bit of money to spare we make pretty sure we get good value!

"Drop in used car values predicted"

I asked to buy a nearly new car, saying up to 1 year and 10k miles, and named my maximum figure over which I would not go, and the reply was "If I can get you a new one for that price have we got a deal?" So who buys nearly new cars on that basis?

Look up to me - I've been promoted

I, too, appear to be "Elite". Probably my retired lecturer friends and liking for classical music did it. It blows you right out of the water, mate, because I'm a walking scarecrow!

    Britain's most evil man

I too opened the thread expecting to read about them. Two huge screen tellies, fully loaded Sky package, a snooker table, and 17 kids. Good thing he didn't rebuild cars as well!

    So, 2nd worst parkers....

Yesterday pm, I was the only car in the car park at our local vet's. When we had finished our visit (the dog is now back to normal) some woman had parked her Nissan Puke right next to me, car park still empty apart from the two cars! Is my W204 magnetic?

    oil and amp gauges

I'm not quite sure of the value of oil pressure guages since by the time a readout which warns you of impending failure appears it's probably too late anyway. You also need a lot of background information to understand what's going on. The engine in an MGB, for instance, should not show below 50...

    Donald Campbell

Did anyone else watch last night's offering from the BBC about Donald Campbell and his efforts to secure the land and water speed records? Granted that he was one of my heroes as a boy, so I would be biased wouldn't I, but what a bloke. I am old enough to have read about and seen film of, his...

    Savings ISA (regardless of type).

Buy shares wrapped in an ISA, just using a broker. All you will pay is brokerage, as you will be managing the thing yourself. The only clver bit is knowing which share to buy, but utilities seems a good bet at present.
