    W124 Coupé: headlamp wiper motors

Not exactly an engine issue, but where else does it belong . . . I dug out the service record of the main dealer who sold me my E320 Coupé in November 2000. Looking at the fine details properly for the first time, I find that they replaced one headlamp wiper motor during the pre-delivery check...

    Petty theft in Herts

During the past fortnight, my car and a friend's MB have been stripped of their dustcaps: larger hexagonal ones that are easier to handle. Yesterday, a black laurel-leaf centre cap was prised off my car. It looks like these incidents happened in Whitwell during daytime, the other possibility...

R129 SL500: seized autobox sump bolts

Any bright ideas for dealing with the slender bolts fixing the autobox sump to the main housing? Torqued at a mere 8Nm, isn't it just ironic that they should be corroded, and my mechanic is very reluctant to force them beyond their obvious point of resistance.

    Top covers

Any recommendations for covers to protect an R129 soft-top? That is, a cover over the soft-top only, rather than the whole car.

Locked out of my 1997 R129 SL 500

Not sure whether this belongs in electronics . . . I was locked out of my newly arrived 1997 SL 500 on Friday. I heard a knocking sound from the offside, so drew into a lay-by, left the engine running, got out and shut the door (the knocking came from a loose jacking-point cover). Within...

    Hard-top cover/stand for R129 SL

I'm looking for information and opinions on hard-top covers and stands for an R129 SL. So far I have discovered this: UK Custom Covers - Home and have had Autopak covers recommended, which are twice the price of the Custom Covers product. Anyone here with experience of either or both?

    CLOGged off

A well worn topic, I know, but . . . I had a good trip to Lyneham (Wilts) yesterday, 100 miles each way, spoilt by only one feature. I don't do that many longish trips these days and have therefore not been much exposed to irritation by the CLOG brigade (Centre Lane Owners Group). What crass...

Classics on the Common, Harpenden, 29 July

May I remind everyone about one of the best events in the country? Classics on the Common It's a general event, but there will be a good sprinkling of MBs. The total number of exhibitors is limited this year for some reason, but it's still going to be well over a thousand. Unless you are...

    Car colours

In the FT Weekend Magazine on Saturday there is a feature on car colours, derived from a DuPont survey. Below are the % stats (NAm = North America). It has also been said that silver cars are less likely to be involved in accidents than those with other colours (U. of Auckland research). Make of...

    Browser software: Firefox hesitation

Has anyone found a solution to the problem of Firefox (3.0.11) hesitating for seconds before responding to mouse clicks? I've searched the Web and can find nothing but frustrated users and one or two reports of "no solution". Windows XP SP2 firewall is on and there is no interference from a...

    Attempt at theft

Some lowlife has had a go at my E300 TT in the lock-up garage that it sometimes occupies. They failed, but ruined the fuel flap and damaged its surrounding edges. Is that area of the car an obvious target for a security breach or do you reckon they were just after the fuel? Someone here will...

    Replacement keys: huge price increase

On 31 May 2006 I bought two spare keys for my W124 at £9.50 each (plus VAT). Yesterday I bought two keys (with a replacement ignition barrel) for my W126 at £26.00 each (plus VAT). No explanation other than MB's annual price increases.

    Ignition barrel failure

No doubt this has been said before, but if your ignition barrel starts behaving poorly, get it changed immediately. In my W126 I have hesitated and fiddled the key for no more than a very few start-up sessions, but the barrel has now well and truly failed, and the car is stuck outside the garage...

    W124 wings: confirmation

I visited MB Milton Keynes yesterday and sorted out some parts. While there I enquired about W124 wings. Using the VINs for my 1991 saloon (pre-facelift) and 1996 Coupé (post-facelift), it was confirmed that they are indeed the same parts for both: A124 880 50 18 RH with indicator hole A124...
