If you're just looking for a little more oomph, might it not be easier to fit the 2.3 litre version of the M102 engine, as fitted to the W123 230E? This engine has 136bhp as opposed to the 109bhp of the 200, so not a huge improvement, but would probably be fairly simple to fit.

This is a total stab in the dark, but could the oxygen sensor be faulty? Could it be giving the ECU incorrect information about the mixture strength, which the system is then trying to correct using the EHA? It probably wouldn't do any harm to test all of the system's sensors one by one. Unless...
