    W221 reliability and running costs

I used it for motorway driving ( 2x200mile journeys per week ) for a couple of years and got between 35 and 42 MPG ( I am quite a slow and smooth driver most of the time ). Later I used it for a mix of local journeys and long runs, around 30mpg on short journeys and up to the 42mpg on the long...

    W221 reliability and running costs

Over the years mine had a couple of Airmatic valves, a new compressor and some other odds and ends like rear exhaust brackets, sensors and ABS rings. Other consumable things like batteries, brakes etc were also replaced but overall the running costs were not too bad as I did most things myself...

Thinking of leaving Mercedes after 20 straight years of ownership...

Well, deal done, S Class gone ( although it's still parked where I left it, poor thing ) driven Range Rover a few miles and all I can say about it is "it's not an S Class". The quality is some way behind, ergonomics are poor having to touch screen most things, interior noise is slightly higher...

Thinking of leaving Mercedes after 20 straight years of ownership...

I think the time has come to move on and try something new... I have in mind a late L322 Range Rover so famed for it's reliability... so the W221 S class, mine for the last 6 and a bit years and my Volvo C70 are going up for sale to help fund the new car... Thank you to everyone on here who has...

    W221 s class errors!

Will probably be either a wheel speed sensor or the sender ring it reads. Need to get it on Star to see exactly if it is and which one. If it's the sensor it's about £100 plus ( easy ) fitting. Sometimes switching off and locking the car then opening and starting it, then drive around ( need to...

"Reckless E63 Owner Banned and Car Seized"

You need to keep your wits about you on that road while driving within the law, 2 lanes merging and splitting on a couple of sections, traffic stopped to turn right etc. It is nothing short of a miracle the eejit didn't kill someone..... by the way, his MOT "offside front tyre has a cut in...

The Grand Tour - will you be watching?

After enjoying the first episode I am disappointed in episode 2, 10 mins worth watching and the rest as poor as the worst of Top Gear.

The car you let go, that you'd like back the most?

None, they were all sold for good reason... I did contemplate buying back my SL500 but given how little used it was when I sold it, common sense took over.

    Car remained unlocked all night

nothing you can do to automatically lock it, the mirror position is the best visual check which I now do every night as part of the lock up routine.... I've done worse, been woken at 2am by the alarm going off because I've locked it but left a window open...

    Extreme badge snobbery

Out for a wee walk at lunchtime I saw not 1 but 2 Chrysler 300Cs with Bentley style grills one of which had the cheek to be sporting a Bentley badge.... I wonder how many folk are fooled into thinking a 20 year old E-Class in a new frock is actually a Bentley ( VW in a posh frock )...

Would you buy from dealer without warranty?

I bought my current car from a main ( but not Mercedes ) dealer. I had been watching it as it was local and I was looking for a w221 at the time. The car hit it's 5th birthday and the price dropped by 25% so I went straight to the dealer who told me the price was reduced to clear but it came...

    Milestones Met

My W221 S320, purchased on it's 5th birthday at 45k miles, may not be the youngest, fastest, most reliable, prettiest, best equipped car I have ever owned but it has just hit it's 10th birthday and has coincidentally just turned 100k miles and it is by far the BEST car I have ever owned and the...

    W204 Aerial Amplifier

I have a similar issue on the W221. I noticed some time back that certain street lights interfere with the radio reception. Now, when I put on the rear demister the interference is bad. Early in the morning, ie. when damp, I can get interference whether or not the demister is on. I think I may...

    Hissing from Airmatic Suspension.

My W221 almost always lets out a short hiss when locked, sometimes it's a little longer and quieter, always done it and seems normal. Like was said, sounds like it's just venting. I never hear it when driving though....

    R-Class AC drainage pipe

I was concerned that I wasn't seeing a puddle under my w221 S-class. When I looked for the pipe, thinking it was blocked, I couldn't find it. I had it pointed out to me by the merc specialist when up on the ramp. You have to take off the undertrays to find it, directly below the evaporator. It...
