Best and easiest way is as follows. Run them under the tap with just clean water. You need to get rid of all the tiny bits of dust/grit first. The use some liquid soap and get in all the edges and spaces around the pad arms if they are metal. This simply removes all the lipids/oils/grease etc...

I'd say it doesn't really make that much difference. We do lots of journeys fairly well loaded and I don't feel I lose a much if any space over the w211 that came before. I wouldn't automatically discount it for that reason.

When I spoke to an indie dealer about an sl500 he had on a ramp he strongly suggested a 350 as being a far better long term buy owing to a lack (relatively) of complexity. The XJR was a lot of car for the money but 211 E55 are less and e63 6.2 can be had for £10k. I'd say it was about right.
