Many thanks for that, I think you hit the nail on the head on many accounts there.. I may take my chances with the dealer.. A replacement Audio 20 head unit would presumably be compatible so this may be the worst case scenario.

Think you may be right. Hopefully the Firmware is upgradeable. I also gather they need to fool the phone prep into thinking it's enabled to make it work too if you don't have a phone installed.

I think with MOST the CD changer input is a bespoke connector of some sort, but presumably Mercedes have some sort of adaptor as part of the iPod kit that connects to it.

Hi Folks As per the title of the above post, is this possible? My Merc dealer (Milton Keynes) seems to think the MB official kit will work (at £345 inc VAT fitted) but I'm unclear whether my car has MOST wiring or not. There's a cd changer input but from other threads it's not clear to me...

Do you need COMAND on a W211 to be able to retrofit? I'm guessing the standard cd headunit won't take it as there is no Aux input.. just a more problematic cd changer input.

Anyone know whether there is any way to software upgrade the W211 Audio 20 to play MP3 CD's ? Does it play them if you have the 6 disc in dash changer?

Spoke to my dealer about this the other day. Looks like you still need an aux input for this to work. My Audio 20 audio doesn't have this (just a fiber output for a changer. The forthcoming Dension solution might be may only way of getting hooked up..shame, the MB one looks cool!

I think a US 2005 equates to what we would call a 2004 car in the UK though.. don't think they've change the spec. It can definitely be retrofitted, it's just the requirement of an aux input that's a potential hitch for me (no COMAND you see!).

Shame there's no easy way of doing that with the standard W211 E Class head unit. Your set up sounds neat. IMHO Mercedes are missing a trick by not offering a slick BMW / IPod type solution.
