I got the car back from mercedes and after checking the entire electrical system including modules ans sensors it turned out 4 of the sensors were bad (1 front and 3 in the rear) the outer o/s/r had an internal electrical failure which left an open circuit causing all the problems. So costs...

Update: The car is now at the main dealer workshop and £150 diagnostic has revealed there is no voltage reaching the sensors. A fact I had already been made aware of by the independent specialist so that's money down the drain. They are now going to spend another 2hrs and £300 more searching...
