    It took me about 15 minutes to change both belts, you don't need to remove the fan just the plastic fan shroud which is very easy to do, once this is off you've got more room for maneuver. Make sure you've got diagrams to give you the run of the belts as their route is quite tortuous.

    Probably stating the obvious here (sometimes the simple thigs are overlooked) check your mats not fowling your throttle pedal ;)

    Ian I have used a hydrocarbon sniffer test on many cooling systems and speaking personally found it to be a very unreliable piece of kit, not totally useless but not infallable, I personally would put more faith in a good pressure test in the hands of a good operative

That said how sure are you of the garages diagnosis have they done a thorough cooling system pressure test. I certainly would not commit myself to a £600 charge...

    I think I'd be more inclined to find out why the engines suddenly become obtrusively noisy rather than tryng to mask the problem with sound proofing. You may be ignoring the warning signs of a developing problem :crazy:

    I'm not sure whether the diesels are immobilised by DAS system on the key, hopefully someone with more in depth info will chime in for you, sadly I don't think the keys can be programmed

    There may be an immobiliser issue Oh a P.S. as well you should not be undoing pipes to check for pressure when working properly it's enough pressure to fire the diesel through your skin and into your blood stream, worst case scenario can be fatal.

    So you have the biggest spanner hey, a degree in quantum physics and the wiring diagram for the human heart to boot, bring on fibrillation (had it several time this last year) it beats exchanging posts with you;) P.S. Never been near a thermostat with O/A torch in my life honest Guv.

    That does sound like a fusible link you're describing if it looks cracked it' probably just a fatigue fracture if it's blown it will be obviously burnt ;)
