dead or speedo

The dials on my 2001 S500 are completely dead and the speedo is stuck at 60mph. I vaguely recall hearing about a recall for this problem. Is it therefore possible to take the car into Mercedes under a recall? Unfortunately, the last service was carried out at an independent so would this stop...
