£100 extra for 7G transmission service just because it's an AMG

Genuine question, but why don’t you want to do the job yourself? :thumb:

Well actually I might now. But at £200 it definitely wasn't worth the mess. Gearbox oil is smelly stuff! I do know that if I do it the level will be spot on.

I did want the transmission oil change showing in the Digital Service Book though.

According to ASRA an ATF change on the 722.930 takes 0.9 of an hour at Service A or 0.8 if it's done at Service B .

If the car had a STOP/START it adds 0.2 .

Interestingly on a 4 pot diesel with the 722.9 box and a TC it's 1.2 and 1.0 respectively plus 0.2 for a STOP/START pump.

Thanks. That's the definitive answer I was looking for.

Would the DSB show up a non-scheduled ATF change though, as I thought they only logged actual services (ie A or B) along with the additional work as required (which can include ATF if it’s due).

In other words, if you book in for just an ATF change alone, I’m not sure that it would be logged on the DSB.

If this is your reason for booking in at this garage, I would check first :thumb:

The 722.93 box can only be drained and refilled from below. As doesn't have a transmission tube in the engine bay. The car needs to be raised to get accessable room to drain and refill. Also the temperature needs to be an accurate temperature when refilling. If one has all the lifts and tools to hand I don't see it being to hard of a job.

Also many garages don't drain the cooling system of the transmission as the job can become very awkward and the cooling pipe bolts don't take to being removed easy or straight forward. The two change method is preferred over draining the cooling trans system.

True to some extent but no point in wasting money unnecessarily either if you are being shafted...!
Exactly so. I've always been pissed with builders sticking a couple of noughts on the estiquote because I have a large house in a good area.

And to close this thread out:

  • The official Mercedes ASRA times for the work for an AMG 7G MCT 722.930 transmission oil change are in fact shorter than most other models with the 7G gearbox.
  • I sent a polite email to the specialist asking why there was a £100 price differential between AMG models and other models. They asked for my registration then nothing.
  • I phoned another Mercedes Specialist local to me and they told me a 7G gearbox oil change was the same price regardless of the car and they would charge me £220 incl VAT to do that transmission oil change.
  • I've cancelled the job with the first specialist that charges the £100 extra and I've booked in with the one that charges fairly.

Thanks for all the feedback.

He drives a C63... every time it goes out it’s literally pouring money down the drain o_O

Still, £75 saved. Happy days

There's a marked difference there though.

Money you are spending on fuel, repairs etc. that is all part of the nature of running a car like this.

That is expensive enough without then wasting money on being ripped off or paying over the odds for things.

Money saved on the latter goes towards the former and both add up.

That's why I don't use a main dealer blindly for everything.

I've sat in a main dealer many times over the years in the service area, whilst my car is getting warranty work done, and heard some of the eye-watering prices some people pay for things.

Things which you could get done for much better value for money elsewhere if you can be bothered.

Maybe if you are so rich you don't care it's easy and you are paying for convenience, but I'm not so wasting £75 is not on.

And more importantly, it makes me very unhappy to knowingly be ripped off...

I don’t know... can’t say I’ve ever been ripped off with the car! I know the prices of work required, I’ll just get several quotes and go with the most reasonable/well reputed establishment

Big dealers are having a hard time now. Inchcape and Pendragon announced large closure programmes. I guess the punters are saying "Gotta be sensible with my money. These glass palaces are costing me too much."

Having thought this was over there's one final update:

The original specialist did eventually respond to my email. I had very carefully explained which gearbox I had and why I couldn't understand why I was being charged £295 for an AMG yet a different model Mercedes with an identical gearbox only costs £195.

The reply said they could only assume that I was given an incorrect price for my car, and the actual price was the same at a 7G+ gearbox (which would make perfect sense).

The thing is that when I got the original price it was based on my registration number and a very clear conversation where I explained I had the 7G gearbox and the price I was being quoted differed by £100 from the price for that gearbox on their website. The chap I spoke to said "it's because it's an AMG". At the time I explained again that I was aware of what the job entailed and an AMG with that gearbox was an identical job to another Mercedes with the same gearbox. The chap reiterated it was £100 more "because it's an AMG"...

But this is exactly what the OP is doing - researching into whether it's a good price or not.

Just like you state above... not blindly paying the first price without being sure it is fair.

Seems fair enough to me.

You won't go back to that specialist, will you? I wouldn't either. Once bitten...

It’s not, had i of added that during that process I’d go on the internet to complain, then I’d say we think alike...
