Has anyone heard of or done the £999 challenge at santa pod? Im thinking of giving it ago this year, basically buy a car and make it fast for less than a grand :) easy right?

Does anyone have any good ideas for cheap and easly tunable cars? Stick a big turbo on or something, play with fuelling etc

They allways turn up with some intresting creations for that. I've been a follower of "practical perfomance car" for years, but never got round to entering in the 999 chalenge.

If we're talking MB, then I'd buy one with the biggest/most powerful engine within budget, and put it on a serious diet - strip out everything, lighten what you can etc.

Sell some of the leftovers, maybe use the cash for a different ratio final drive diff and some sticky rear tyres.

    Cheap W140 S500 for under £1k has 300+bhp out of the box. Maybe a cheap E430 W210?

Increased power is hard to find in MBs on a budget like that, hacking weight off an old car like that shouldn't be impossible.

How much can you spend on the car? Or is that included in the grand?

The normal rules are that you have £999 to buy and/or build your car. The car must be road legal with mot and tax. You are allowed to sell off parts from the car, for example seats ect, to gain funds for modifications.
At no point must you go over £999.

describes my current car buying strategy, i'd have £549 left for mods on the saab, what could you do to it for so little cash?

On mercs an e430 would be a good candidate.

I would have thought a Volvo 740 turbo would be the ideal starting place

    Hello

We did it a few years ago...

We looked at some sheddy subarus... but then thought we actually need to sell it afterwards...

We bought a Totota Celica (great car and I cleaned it up) paid £675 spens around £125 on it, did the challenge and then sold it and made a small profit.

2 friends bought Supra 3000's one a normal injection and the other a Turbo...

Other cars includes MR2's (are the turbos cheap now?) the Volvo T5 (was quick also)

Ours we left completely std and did realy really well, 0-60 still in around 8.2. Others went s bit mad and changed glass for plastic windows and stripped out all the interior. However we drove there in the Celica had a nice weekend there with friends and drove back :)

The quickest car was a 4 wheel reliant robin thing with a motorbike engine...

All in all great fun, from what I saw it seems that something that handles well and also quick in a straight line would be good. The celica if we had put nos in it would have been great as it did really well. Helps that it didn't actually cost us anything either and I think still a nice shape?

Can you get a GT4 for £999 now??

It seems if you really want to go quick...

Lose the weight.. seats / trim / spare / everything

    Add NOS

How is all this proved, for example you could buy the car and pay £2000 for it then get a receipt to say you paid £999 ?

    You cannot prove it really,

It more trust and the fact most people would know what things cost...

The winner when we did it was the Riliant with a motorbike engine, quite a few differences on the cost that that would have cost also...

I wonder if you could MOT this and make it road legal for under £999? It doesn't have to look pretty. A lightweight car with a bike engine is going to be hard to beat.
