“warning gear lever in park"

Got a very odd problem. When I move the gear lever from Park to Reverse or Drive a red warning comes up and says “warning gear lever in park" which patently it's not. As the car rolls forward or backwards it goes out.

Has anyone had the same problem?

Car is a W211 E55.
