E63 AMG
Hi all im new here and hopefully purchasing my first AMG mercedes soon. Its an 06 E63 and I just have one little and im hoping someone can put my mind at ease. Ive read all sorts of horror storys about cam/tappet failure so im trying to make sure im not about to buy a bad car. The one im looking at does have an audible tappet sound although nothing like the horror vids ive seen on youtube. You cant hear it from inside the car but it is audible from outside. Its not very loud but it is there. A friend of mine tells me its perfectly normal but i just wondered if anyone here has any input as I really am not fimiliar with these engines. Its covered 97000 miles. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.:thumb:

before you buy it take it to a mercedes garage and ask for their opinion .
My c63 hasn't got any tapping noises.

its a bit of a struggle as the car is quite a distance away.Next time I go see it will hopefully be to purchase it so I was just wondering if anyone elses made any tappet noise????

They all rattle a bit.... Just make sure it's not using or loosing coolant. The headbolts are more of an issue (well as in cost wise)

Mine (my previous M156) rattled on start up for about a second. There is a TIPS document about the problem and the fix.

I did a video of mine.

If you're paying to change the cam adjuster mechanism and the buckets at a main dealer, it's expensive - c£4500.

I should be able to find/post both the document and the video if that would help.

Where are you based?

Mine doesn't at all.

The only way to tell if the top end is noisy is to start it from cold when it has been stood overnight.

if they left for a few days they might do a little tap for a second or two but that's normal even my e55 does it!

Yes, I should have said start up from cold - thanks.

I bought my 06 E63 with 60k miles two months ago and was likewise filled with concerns....so took a mobile Merc specialist with a Star system down for the full inspection before I purchased. £125 very well spent. Once I got it home, I took it in for a 'minor' service and had the gearbox oil changed - just to be sure(!)

Sent from my iPad using MBClub UK

I'm based in Oxford but the cars in Bedford. Been phoning around and no main dealers are willing to give any advice. Spoke to an independent specialist and he said it may be completely normal. Aaaaaargh so confused!!!! Just don't want an engine rebuild or something.

it's better safe than sorry! :thumb:

Well as you all said better safe than sorry so I've booked it in to mercedes bedford to have the noise checked over and get it roadtested etc and make sure she's sweet. In all fairness when the car was started it'd been stood for a month so this might explain the valvetrain noise. The dealer who's selling it is being very good about it and is taking the car there for me Wednesday to get checked over. Fingers crossed she's good to go because I'm in love with the beast!!!!
