diesel filling up sump over a period of coupel of weeks, warning light comes on, oil level to high. dealer doesent know how to fix or what problem is, seems to be fairly common, not getting much joy from dealer or distributor in ireland, anyone any views..:doh:

One thing that can cause this allegedly is exhaust back pressure due to a partially blocked cat or DPF [diesel particle filter] Extra combustion chamber pressure forces diesel fuel past the rings contaminating the oil- if the oil volume increases too much the crank starts to whip up the oil entraining air leading to bottom end oil starvation and engine wear. Similar problem in VW and Mazda and subaru legacy engines. Mazda Mazda 6 - 08 2.0d DPF problems: Motoring Technical matters forum Usually happens when the exhaust doesn't get warm enough to burn off the accumulated soot in the DPF due to many short journeys.
As more DPFs get fitted to turbo diesels this type of problem is only going to increase.
I would get the Sprinter checked out by a specialist commercial diesel workshop if I were you.

have been told by dealer to try and avoid short distance journeys and to drive flat out for 20 minutes every 5000 km. did you ever here such a load of rubbish. i wasent told that when i gave 35000 for the van 18 months ago.

Hi
Is the sprinter high mileage. What engine is in it.

I had the same problem on a c220 and it turned out to be the fuel high pressure pump leaking into the engine.

sprinter has 55000 kilometers, not sure what eng 4 cylinder 315

I would get the dealer to look at the high pressure pump as it sounds like exactly the same problem i had at my dealers.

It took a while to work out where it was coming in but it is really the only place it can get in so quickly and fill up the oil

Mutec are a complete nightmare to deal with regarding this issue . Your are not the only one suffering with this issue .

The reason the sump is filling up with diesel is down to the active regeneration process that is taking place , part of the post injection fueling is condensing on the bore and the rings are dragging in the fuel .

Software updates improve things a little , but the sumps still fill as with other cars , mazda , Hyundai ect

Easy fix , remove the DPF filter and adjust the calibration so it doesnt regen . \you will have no more issues + better fuel consumption

this has been a issue Mercedes are dealing with weve had a couple of these it tends to be on parcel vans that suffer alot short journeys stop start etc it doesnt allow the vans DPF to regen probley. after we had couple that led to engine changes the next one we had the same issue with Mercedes mades us watch and record details so the tech department could try and find a cause and then find the soloution,
It seems this led to a recall in which the Control unit is flashed and when need to the van will put up a new light (this will state the van require a manual regen this can be done by taking for a blast down the nearst motorway/dual carrigeway, it seems Mercs have solved it and it less of then issue then 12 months ago
As for you engine a 08 315 is a OM646 as used in spinter vitos and some cars

Hi guys sorry to come on here with another newbie problem but i need advice.

All started at 10312 miles into my ever long lasting relationship with my beloved mercedes 315 2008 mwb sprinter i was at work and the oil warning light come on saying oil lvl to high, so i phoned bell trucks up they sent an engineer out, he said oil lvl ok needs to go in to garage was in for a day they phoned me saying all done come and collect your vehicle, so when i arrived at the garage, they said that will be £186 please £££ they informed me you put to much oil in so the price was £150 for the call out and £36 to drain the oil.
WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP I SAID Any way got that sorted.

Well anyway over the next 2 and a half years the van had been in the garage a number of times getting oil and filter changes and they also changed the injectors last october but the problem is still there.

I was advised by MBUSA that !!

1 Avoid frequent short distance driving.
2 Or large amount of idling.
3 Preform a major drive on the motorway every 500 kilometers to support DPF regeneration.
4 If this problem occurs, preform a premature oil service (YET MORE MONEY) on top of the £38,000 its costing me to buy this vehicle.

My van has only done 27,571 miles
My job is a self employed window cleaner.
Do any of you guys think we have the RIGHT to be told of this problem before we spend this sort of money.

And to top that all off i had it in garage for some my warranty corrosion removal they wanted me to pay 55% and they pay 45% is that because it was the day before my warranty run out i don't no.

Well thats me done for now sorry for me going on a bit.

Jim

The DPF filter will block due to short journeys not permitting regeneration as they said to you. However another cause is if the garage uses the wrong engine oil. It has to be what they call LOW SAPS (Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur) meeting MB 229.31 or 229.51 standard. This oil produces less ASH in the exhaust which can block up the DPF prematurely. Diesel overfuelling or low quality diesel fuel may do the same thing. Maybe this is the problem? http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolistenmain.php?entercustomer=true&language_id=1

ps overfuelling often leads to diesel fuel getting into the engine oil raising the level till you get a warning light

Thanks for that grober so where does that leave me then and the other folk who have spent thousands and is going to cost even more thousands, its just another kick in the teeth to us sole traders who don't do at lot of miles.

You no something i bit the bullet to buy the best and i thought it would last me the rest of my working life which is about 10 years due to health reasons but looks like it won't even see the lease through.

Very disappointed with MB but do they care!!!

I agree entirely with your corrosion argument, but I can't see what's wrong with the 4 points that Mercedes advised you to do?

Are you in the U.S.?

sweetpea ye i understand what you are saying about the 4 points but if i was told this when i went to buy the van i would not of bought it

You see my job like i said i am a window cleaner i do stop and starts so in my eyes the van is not fit for my purpose for my job and MB do say this van can do any job

I feel for you pal, honestly. But to be fair, there won't be many manufacturers out there that will be happy with a van or car that is stop-start a lot.

Is it too much to give it a blast on the motorway once a week?

MB vans are overrated, and they don't really care about their customers.

If a £6991 Vauxhall Combo working for the Post Office can cope with a start stop lifestyle, a £38k MB should also be able to.

How about this Mercedes-Benz Sprinter ECO-START : STOP, START, SPRINTER
they call it the the best van for the urban user.

P.S Answer to your previous post m8 i do motorway miles 3 times a week at least 30 mile round trip
